Help!! Moving to Clarks Summit, PA

I need some help. I am moving to Clarks Summit, PA from Long Island, NY. Although I am looking forward to the changes and being closer to my family, I am a little sad that I will miss the food from NY.

Please, please if you have any recommendations for any good food, especial ethnic foods near (within an hour) of Clarks Summit, I would greatly appreciate it.

I was given some great recommendations on an Indian restaurant in Moosic, but anything else, please let me know.

    I can assure you that most of the chow hound readers have no idea where Clarks Summit is and that ALL of us chow hound readers feel truly sorry for you.
    Nevertheless, why dont you give us an idea of what cities, if any, are within an hours drive of yours and then we might be able to help you.

      The first reply is terribly ignorant and quite absurd. I am a foodie who is in NY every weekend that I am not in my home in Philly.

      I grew up in the WB/Scranton area (Waverly), the largest towns next door...There are a few good places.

      In Moosic, Amber is a decent Indian place. Le Thai in Dickson City is also quite tasty.

      Try Gelpiaz in Kingston, as well as Bistro Bistro. Katana in WB is great sushi, and there is a place in Clarks Summit that is good as well (can't remember the name).

      AVOID: Robata....

      There is a lot of Italian in Old Forge....if you like Italian American. Try Bruticos for dinner and Arcaro and Genell's for pizza. My fave Chinese is Beijing in Kingston...great rangoons.

      Try to join a club or two as well, such as Westmoreland, or one of the country clubs.

          Philly Girl, you may be thinking of Michaelangelo's (wonderful intimate Continental).

          Tom---welcome!! There are DOZENS of great places in NEPA. The styles of pizza alone, could send you on a year long exploration. I'm a 36 year-old lifer and I would second Katana for sushi, The Amber for Indian, Le Thai in Dickson City.

          PAR FOUR---Parrish Street, Wilkes-Barre (great eclectic food in a very casual---is that a restaurant?--atmosphere!)
          WOODY BROWN'S---Northampton Street, Wilkes-Barre (great barbecue and wonderful fried fish).
          TONY'S---Main Street, Wilkes-Barre (the jerk chicken was mind blowing!)
          TONY'S (no relation)---Route 11 Kingston. A diner that serves Italian hoagies and omelettes of all varieties. Truly a one-of-a-kind place and the Wyoming Valley's hidden treasure.
          GLIDER DINER---Providence Road, Scranton. Hot Roast Beef and Mashed Potatoes covered in gravy. Excellent pie too (open 24 hours, closed Sunday).
          TONY STELLA'S GOODFELLOWS---Rt. 92 Exeter. Intimate Italian. A great splurge! Reservations advised.
          LINCOLN INN, DUPONT (Casual Italian. It's a house! get anything with red sauce).

          And for Pizza...
          GHIGIARELLI'S AND REVELLO'S Main Street in Old Forge (Old Forge Style---Red Square Pizza)
          PIZZA PERFECT---Carverton Road near Rt. 309, Trucksville (greasy, oniony, delicious square "Polish" pizza).
          SENAPE'S---West 17th Street, Hazleton. Cold square tomatoey slices from a bakery. You buy 'em and eat 'em cold!

            Yes, I like Beijing, too! Good Chow Fun, which isn't so easy to find.

              Don't be so quick to "assure". Clarks Summit and the NEPA area has wonderful food.
              Old Forge Pizza - Revello's being my favorite, is truly unique style of pizza that quickly becomes addictive.
              Coney Island in Scranton for "texas style" wieners.
              Katana in WB for sushi.
              Cooper's in Scranton for an amazing beer selection.
              And in Clark's Summit I've had a great dinner at the Ryah House (creative american?) several years ago.
              I currently live in NYC and look forward to every trip back to NEPA for friends and food.

                  Yeah...that Rosenthal is real smug-ass. After a decade in Manhattan I moved to the Clarks Summit/Waverly area. Its great. Waverly is like a little mini- New England Town or mini-Philly mainline outside of Scranton...tons of old money (DuPonts helped build up Waverly) and nice atmosphere....(in fact, key architect of the award-winning Apple stores lives around the corner from me). Of course there is no way you're going to find the sheer volume and variety in terms of food compared to NYC area -- how could you? But there are some really nice, rewarding places. We like State Street Grille, Patsel's, Milestone Ranch, Thai place in Scranton...La Vida in Scranton...there's some good mexican and cuban food popping up...there's some excellent Japanese in Clarks Summit...What's really fun is to take trips into these little idyllic PA towns in the mountains and discover places....I have yet to try the Indian place in Moosic.

                    I'm not an expert on indian food but when i lived in port jervis, ny, (about 1 hr. east of scranton on rte 84) , the Moosic place was worth the trip, as was the thai place in scranton; a few places in Milford, pa. are also worth the drive depending on your mood: the Dimmick; the Water Wheel sometimes runs Viet Namese weeks... great bar, say hello to Darren, barkeep for me!; a few other places you might look up in Milford that i can't remember names of ( a few yrs ago, my bad memory)

                2. I also grew up in the area- right in CS actually and have lived in DC, NY, and Philly but still have such a good feeling returning to the area and yes going out to eat. Again you will not find anything close to NYC but there is some good stuff. Here goes:
                  1.Kyoto= the sushi that was mentioned without a name before. Right in CS
                  2.The Hoagie Hut= en route to Tunnkannock. Great Italian and cheese steaks or in NEPA they refer to them as "steak and cheese"
                  3.Dee Jays in Scranton= hoagies
                  4.Armetta's in CS and Revello's or Arcaro&Genell in Old Forge= Sicilian style pizza
                  5. Kelly's in Scranton= best wings
                  6. La Tratoria in Scranton= good Italian and great garlic twists

                  1. Hi! I think you'll find some great food in NE PA. I'm originally from Wilkes-Barre, have lived in D.C. for the past 8 years. I always look forward to going home to EAT!

                    I really like Hottles, which is on Main Street in W-B. It's my favorite restaurant at home. It's American/Seafood. Also a must do is Grico's... it's near Kingston in Exeter (both are near W-B). Coopers seafood in Scranton for great Crab soup.

                    Like the other posters mentioned, I would try Amber, the Indian restaurant in Moosic.

                    Jim Dandy's is a good pub for sandwiches, soups etc. There's one in Kingston and Clarks summit. Also, the Kosher Deli in Kingston...Goldstein's Deli is phenomenal.

                    For upscale, I would try 'The Overbrook' in Dallas (they also own Bistro Bistro in Kingston) as well as the Beaumont Inn. There's also 'Amici' in Clarks Summit that I've been too years ago and it was very good. Not sure how the Ryah House is these days, but that's right in Clarks Summit.

                    I've also heard great things about Brutico's in Old Forge and all the pizza places are great.

                    If I think of more, I'll post.

                      ooooh, if you haven't been to Goldsteins in a while, you may not know that it's not what it was 10 years ago. A MUCH better choice is the Beer Deli.

                      Clarks Summit is a bit far north for me to have a lot of recommendations. I've been to Amici's and The Beaumont within the past few years, and enjoyed both tremendously.

                      If you're coming from NYC, what you need to know is this: you won't find avante-garde food here. The area won't support it economically. It's not even that people won't like it or aren't interested in it, it's that they don't want to risk their money on something that might not be any good. The people who can afford to chance a couple hundred dollars on a good meal of unusual ingredients can also go to NYC to get it; the rest of us slobs will still spend a couple hundred on a meal, but we'll stick to steak and lobster and whatever is one or two steps beyond, because for that kind of jing it better be reliably good.

                      So what you will find is exquisitely well crafted versions of traditional foods, with a heavy tilt toward Italian and seafood. For Italian dinners, I'll stake Arcaro & Genell's in Old Forge, King's in Mountain Top, and The Ovalon in Hazleton against anyone. Brutico's in Old Forge is mentioned in the book "I Heard You Paint Houses" as once having been a favorite place for the wise guys. The Ovalon is very much the same kind of place with the same reputation. I've never eaten at Brutico's but The Ovalon is really great. Actually Hazleton is probably the best eating town of the 3, out of Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Hazleton; I've had heart-renderingly good meals at Damenti's (Mountain Top), The Ovalon, Charlie Weaver's (White Haven), The Library (another wise guy place), Scatton's, Alta, Zola's Italian House, Amici, Brother Bruno's....

                        Well you make a good point about the food not being avant-garde. I guess it's best to set expectations. However, I know you agree, that the food is outstanding. I'm wondering, what would you choose as a cutting-edge avant-garde type place? I need new places to explore when I get home!

                        I was trying to think of Dementi's earlier. I've never been but heard wonderful things about it. It's also too bad about Goldstein's but I have always liked the beer deli.

                          Wow, I wouldn't consider ANYTHING in NEPA to be avante-garde.

                          When we last went to NYC, we wanted to find a place that would be considered really really outstanding, a world class meal. We looked through the guides, and made a couple choices, and went to the websites and looked through menus full of jarringly juxtaposed ingredients, and we decided to go to Fresco's, the Scottos' place up around 57th St... which was pretty good, but fairly traditional Italian.

                          When you next come home, try either of these two; Pasquale's, on the Sans Souci in Wilkes-Barre, or Charlie Weaver's, on Tunnel Road in White Haven (off 437 across from Sitko's Barn). Tommy Allegretto, the owner, is a super friendly guy. I know his brother better than I know him. My friend Merri and her husband Joey are good friends of his, and he named a couple menu items after them; Merri's mussels (SPICY HOT!) and Joey's mussels (butter & garlic I think, I never ordered them).

                          Damenti's is the closest thing in the area to an NYC steakhouse. I was there this summer and was served a porterhouse that was 2 pounds, easy. I know Kevin McDonald, the owner and chef; he went to high school with my wife's brother and they pal'd around as teenagers. Nice folks; if a bit hoity now, well, he earned it. I've only eaten there a couple times, though. My wife prefers The Alberdeen, in Mountain Top. I like to get the char-broiled combination platter from The Alberdeen; a pork chop with spiced applesauce, a lamb chop, and a petite filet with a portobello mushroom cap. It's a case of them having a guy who knows how to grill a quality piece of meat.

                            Yeah I think we will try Damenti's and I know Pasquale' grandmother loves it. So the next time I'm down at Dundee Gardens, we'll stop in there for a bite. I do like Hottles. It's a comfort food place. And I'm partial to the Fernbrook Inn in Dallas for lobster tail. My cousin owns it and the Times Leader didn't give it a great review, but the tail is outstanding if you keep them on the small side of big ;-)

                            I think that Philly is a highly underrated food city. There are so many unique BYOB's and some world class restaurants as well. Plus all of the food markets (Italian Market, Reading Terminal). It's just a great mixture. It's too bad W-B/Scranton doesn't develop some of its downtown areas more with some cafes with outside seating, some tapas restaurants or small bites/wine bars, etc. I really struggle when I come back there to find a place to sit out side and grab some coffee. It's tough!

                            But I have to say, while typically people gripe about chain restaurants, I do look forward to some of them when I come home b/c they way they are kept up in DC is nasty. So it's nice to go to Red Lobster when I visit PA :-)

                      1. And hey guys, if I was moving from LI to here I'd feel bad about leaving the food behind, too.

                        It's all in the fun of finding, though, too. I'll never forget driving out Rt6 towards Sayre one Sunday afternoon, and stopping in a little restaurant in a strip mall for what I thought was going to be just a belly filler rather than a meal. I had one of the best butter-burgers I've ever had, and picked up a few jars of flavored mustards (honey, tarragon, jalapeno, horseradish, etc) with hand made labels, "Cheryl's Homemade Mustard, Wyomissing PA", that made me crosseyed with pleasure, and that I've never seen anywhere since.

                        The secret to satisfaction comes from inside the self. It involves believing that there is value and virtue to be found everywhere, sometimes it's laying there right on the surface and other times it has to be mined. But it's there. In NEPA it's not in the frillery, it's in the bedrock.

                          Wow! Great to see so many tips on this thread, I forgot about a few myself! Mosca--I've got to take the drive to the Ovalon, that's a real special place. Haven't been there in years! Hottle's has been around forever...and, well, I've never had a less than great meal there. It's never top of mind for me, perhaps because it was a place my grandmother went to at least twice a month! I guess she was a foodie at heart---certainly was a great cook---and she was Irish!?!

                          Hillside Farms and Manning's (Scranton area small group of stores) both really do have wonderful ice cream. Manning's holiday Ice Cream Cakes are quite exceptional---and pricey---but the season only comes but once a year. Curly Creme in Plains is my favorite soft serve, but they are open for a very short summer season (June--late August).

                          The Beaumont Inn, I believe is closed. It was a really wonderful "splurge", even stayed there a few times. The Alberdeen Inn is very old, very charming, the cuisine is nearly as satisfying.
