Anyone Know where to buy Fresh White Truffles in CC?
I have been searching for fresh white truffles since a recent meal at Striped Bass. I struck out at Dibruno and Assouline. Anyone know anywhere in town where I can purchase or a reputable mail order vendor. Thanks.
Jenny

I believe that the largest produce shop at Reading Terminal sells fresh truffles, although they might only have black.

Wendy,
Is that Iovines (sp?) in the back of the terminal?
Thanks

Seen Iovine's black truffle offering last year, not too promising, the aroma was almost non-existent.
I would recommend looking into online sources if not available at assouline (which I thought were not too impressive to begin with)

If you're willing to travel....there's discussion on the NYC board right now about white truffles. Seems as though they are not as good this year.

The best quality mushrooms and Truffle that are delivered timely and properly packaged are fron D'ARTAGNAN in Jersey city. Go to the website or Call 1 800 Dartagn.
the stuff at reading terminal is tasteless and stored at room temp.

Have you ever purchased truffles mail order? What has been your experience and how do they compare to Dibruno or Assouline in taste quality? Thanks.

I have purchased truffles mail order both from d'artagnan and urbani....Urbani's minimums may be slightlyy expensive for the home cook but Dartagnan will sell in ounces or grams of weight.
D'artagnan packages properly with an Icepack in the box.
There is no point buying it from Dibruno unless you want an unverified source and markups.....go to the source.
as far as I am concerned, the only thing you should buy from assouline is bottled water....I have had so many bad experiences with them.....
Bugs in the Polenta and Lentilles de puy
rancid nut oils which they obviously repackaged
expired dated truffle products.
materized wine
mislabelled caviar.......sevruga as osetra
freezer burned foie gras
not to mention
BLOOMED CHOCOLATE....I hate when people waste my time.
Given the choice of gratuitous root canals in the abscence of local anesthesia or shopping at Assouline, I will deal with the pain.

Wow, I detect anger in your palate. I do love that VOSS water at Assouline but have had terrible experiences also with mislabeled caviar and expired truffle products. Frequently freezer burned smoked salmon and they have always been quite generous with the return/refund policy. My experience has been limited to the Liberty store. Why do you think the nut oils were repackaged? Also, What do you mean by Bloomed Chocolate? Is there nothing they sell that could have an Opiod effect to hit your brains pleasure and pain center....not even the Jubilee chocolates...

Darn right I am angry...I hate ordering stuff and garbage is delivered to me, even if they take it back, what am I supposed to use for my cooking...waste of time.
Yes they repackage the oils and vinegars and freely admit it.Anything they sell under the house label is ordered in bulk and bottled under the assouline name. They make money but the stuff is trash. the nut oils dont even smell remotely like the nut that it is supposed to be.
You can get KELLER oils from downtown cheese in the terminal which are far superior.
BLOOMED CHOCOLATE refers to chocolate that has been stored at improper temperature...usually too hot and it develops this blistered light color.
Jubilee chocolates are just candy you eat, I am referring to COUVERTURE CHOCOLATE for baking such as VALRHONA, COCOA BARRY, GUITTARD and EL REY.The stuff with the marked coacoa percentages.

I too had a bad experience with them a while back. I purchased Jubilee chocolates and they (or somone) had removed the expiration label. I didn't realize at the time that they came with a label.
When I asked if they were fresh I got a surly response from the person behind the counter.
This was a the terminal.

D'ARTAGNAN has a white and a black truffle butter that is affordable and very good, especially for those of us on a tight budget but with royal taste.

On Saturday I saw them at the DiBruno's cheese shop on 18th, in the case w/the cheeses.
