I am a first year student at Wharton and have been designated the Social Chair for my "cohort". I am organizing a bunch of "random dinners" (like dates but for business school students) -- for example: a performance at Curtis Opera Theater follwed by dinner at La Viola. Other restaurants I am making dinner or brunch reservations at are Matyson's, Tangerine, Radicchio, Judy's Cafe, Pumpkin and L2. Any other ideas (especially if I can involve something before / after dinner)?

Sounds like they picked a great person for the job! What fun, for you and for your cohort.

Curtis OPera Theater/La Viola is a great combo, and the restaurants you have picked are super also. Here's a combination you all might enjoy. A "show" at the Convention Center, coupled with a pre-ordered banquet at Shio Lung Kuo on their "can be smoke free" second floor, or a pre-ordered banquet at Ly Michaels, corner of 11th, off Race. The Flower Show is the biggest that comes to mind, but there are other worthwhile extravaganzas at the Convention Center.

BTW, I had a small part in social events for the Wharton School during my tenure as CFO of Hospitality Services. I initiated the Anvil Club, as exclusive lunch club for Wharton Grad Students back in the late 80's in what was originally a little cash-only cafeteria. Students loved it--is it still there?

Anvil Club does not ring a bell. May have been made redundant by the Au Bon Pain monopoly since the opening of the new MBA building (Hunstman) the other year. Thank you for the ideas.

I did the Serrano/Tin Angel thing last night for the Kelly Joe Phelps show. While the food was good, I would not go out of my way to go to Serrano for the food alone. However, since diners get the best reserved seats, I always eat there before going to a concert at Tin Angel.

Coincidentally, I ate upstairs at the World Cafe last week (but I did not catch a show there). I thought the food was very good, and I probably would go again just for the food when I find myself in West Philly.

A bit off topic, but your cohort clearly has more disposable income than I did in my Wharton days. also lots more choices (we had Palumbo's and Grants on campus for fancy dinners, and the dirty drug (aka the Campus Pharmacy) for everyday.

Say hey to student loans. I was jobless for two years during my Wharton days but still managed to have a housecleaner for my apartment!

Wish my cohort had done something similar. We didn't have much in the way of organized socializing outside Pub.

How big is your group? You might consider the city's Mural Arts Tour, which will do custom tours depending on your group size. You could combine that with almost any restaurant.

Also if you are open to some occasional lunches, you might consider a warmer weather hike in the Wissahickon section of Fairmount Park, followed by lunch or brunch at the Valley Green Inn.

The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation also offers a number of themed day tours/lunch, such as a cultural tour of Chinatown, followed by lunch at one of the restaurants. If nothing else, it may give you some ideas for some dinner outings.
