Shellenberger lollipops?

Way back--1940s, 1950s--our Philadelphia aunt and uncle
used to bring us wonderful lollipops from John
Wanamaker. We think the name was Shellenberger.
Does anybody know the right name and where they
were made? Thanks!

I don't know about the lolipops, but wife has a Shellenberger's Chocolates box that she obtained from her grandmother in Ridley after she died. The box originally held a 5lb chocolate cream egg. It is about the size of a shoe box and says happy easter on it along with a listing of all of the Shellenberger's locations. We've always wondered about the candy company and this easter we decided see if we could find any info on it online. Your posting was the only reference to it we found.

I called my 75 yo Mother for you. Shellenberger's was a candy company (so you got the name correct) but we think they have been out of business for quite a number of years.

Thank you, Ravenous. It's too bad they're not making those great lollipops anymore. Still, maybe it's better that I not endanger my memory of the perfect lollipop by actually tasting one with tastebuds that are now 50 years older.

I was a kid in the 50's and we often went to Wanamaker's-- can you describe Shellenberger lollipops-- what was special or unique about them and maybe I'll remember them.

Hmmm. I don't really remember much about them. Wanamaker's sold them in a flat box covered with glossy white paper. I guess the lollipops were fruit flavored plus maybe a licorice one. Delicious!
          Thanks for your interest.

There's a cool old candy store on Market St. between Front and 2nd--Shane's Candies. Maybe they would know?

I freaked out a little when I read your post, and had to call them to confirm the news!

Thankfully, as of today, they are still open. How did you hear they were out of business??

Glad to hear it! I could have sworn I read it somewhere, and I know I walked by on a Saturday and it looked closed. Sorry for the confusion.
