There's a restaurant and cafe on the grounds. You might also try the Crier in the Country, which is a few miles north of Longwood Gardens on Route 1.

The restaurant on the grounds is pleasant and the Sunday buffet is good. You'll probably need reservations during peak lunch/brunch hours. There is also a cafeteria.

The "cafeteria" at Longwood is actually quite lovely and civilized, with views out over the gardens, and the food is very good. There is a dining room as well, which I assume would be a bit more serene. I would urge you to get in there as lunch is beginning, though, because the lines can be long.

When going to Longwood, I often eat at Buckley's Tavern, in Centreville, DE. If you're also going to do Winterthur, Buckley's is conveniently located between the two.

I strongly recommend the cafeteria at Longwood. The food is high quality & well-prepared. I don't think the dining room is worth the higher prices. If you're travelling to Longwood from the north, try Hank's Place, on Route 1 in Chadds Ford (about 4 miles before Longwood and almost directly across the street from the Brandywine River Museum). Nothing fancy, just great breakfast and lunch. Long lines out the door at Hank's are proof of its popularity.

My wife and I went to Longwood Gardens a couple of weekends ago. We lunched at the cafeteria. Probably one of the best I've ever eaten at. From sandwiches to full meals, the selection was great. The topper was their dessert bar, not your ordinary chocolate pudding ans cold apple pie! A huge selection of unique pastries, baked right on the premises. They just keep bringing them out as they are baked. Yes, there was a long line waiting to get in, but they manage it very well. A line out the door that almost discouraged us turned into a 10-12 minute wait. No big deal and well worth the wait.

The caf. at Longwood is quite good, but the line can get long at peak hours. If your spending the day there anyway, it's not such a big deal to eat during off times anyway.

Offsite, I like the Brown Derby - about 5 miles South on Baltimore Pike (rt 1). It's just a typical pub type restaurant, but the food is great, even burgers and such. Haven't been there in few years, so I hope it's still as good as I recall.

I've mentioned this before - Hugo's is just out the exit South on Route 1. A local crowd, lots of mushroom dishes.

I'd second the endorsement of the cafeteria - nice outdoor seating in the garden. I've eaten there every year during a show we put on at the outdoor theater. Other than the trays, what's not to like?
