Just read an intriguing article on dosas in the Village Voice, by Robert Sietsema. They sound delicious. Can anyone recommend a place to get them in Philadelphia?

There was a wonderful little vegetarian carryout (Sadya) at the food court in Forrestal Village in Princeton that served great dosas; they closed this summer. I too would be interested in where else I can find them between here and Philly.

Cafe Spice (upscale Indian bistro, 2nd and Chestnut) does dosas. I think Lovash (2nd and South) may as well, though I've never been there.

The buffet at Passage to India (13th and Walnut) has one variety of dosa and sambar every day, though I think that the dosas really suffer as a buffet item.

(Speaking of, I had been Passage to India once several years ago for dinner and not been thrilled, but their lunch buffet is very good. A little more eclectic than typical, with a little more heat. Still anxiously awaiting the reopening of the more friendly and convenient Darbar, though.)

South Indian food in Philly is hard to come by. We have mostly the Bombay-style buffet places. Even Pakistani food is almost nonexistent - there's Kabobeesh and Kabob Palace in West Philly of course, but IMHO those might as well not exist. This is pretty sad when you think of how many South Indian/Pakistani students go to Penn, Drexel, Temple, etc.

But if you're ever in Bensalem (30 min outside Philly), you can try Udupi Dosa Hut on 2163 Galloway Avenue (215-638-04008). It's hideous and the service is atrocious, but sometimes you just really need a masala dosa. Also, if you're ever near Edison, NJ, you *must* go to Iselin Road (Little India), where you'll find yourself in dosa heaven.

Oh hey looking at the Cafe Spice website, they apparently do dosas for lunch and carryout. But the price! 10 dollars for a dosa! Spend that on gas to Edison on Bensalem and be happy.

[shrug] It's upscale. An adjustment compared to the buffets I frequent, but certainly not out of line for Old City restaurants.

Hi:

While I completely agree with you about the primal need for dosas, I wish to make a small correction, the street in Edison with the great Dosa shops is Oak Tree Road. When it crosses into Iselin, it becomes Greene Street, but the dosas are just as good.

The whole scene is walking distance from the Metropark train station and is a required pilgrimage for those who love South Indian food.

I will second the rec. for Main Line Jewel of India in Ardmore (On Lancaster Ave just east of Ardmore Ave on the north side of the street). I had my first dosas there, and man, were they good. They are very large and somewhere in the neighborhood of $8-9, if I recall correctly. Several filling options are available, and they come with three or four little bowls of different chutneys.

Shivnanda on Chestnut below 2nd claims south indian on their advertising, and in my experience that usually means dosai. Plus I've looked at their menu, and they do have several varieties of them. But I haven't been there.

Hi,

Bombay style buffet?? He He - Having grown up in Bombay there is no such thing as a buffet in Indian restaurants (yet). This seeems to be a copy of Chinese and other buffets.
Anyway they are mostly Northern Indian food as most of the food entrepreneuial types presently are from the North.

Cochin Cove on Rt 27 used to have South Indian buffet with a dosas and idlis. i think it has closed now. The dosas are the genuine home made type not the restaurant type crispy thin types.
Otherwise the best is still Dosa Express in Edison. There are of course many more in Edison.

I get my dosa fix in acouple of ways;
1. Get the Daily delight frozen Masala dosa pak from an indian grocery store. the best ones are Patels , a block north on 309 from the 5 pt Juncton and SAbzi Mandi in Bensalem. It costs fro $2.49. Best way to eat it is to microwave it for 3 minutes and then put it on pan and crisp it around. Eat with sambhar.chutney (comesin pack) or a chutney powder (try Priya brand Nallakaram)

2. Make dosas out of the instant dosa packs (more work )
