I'm trying to find a Mexican place in Philly that can compare to Taqueria la Michohuacan in Norristown (has anyone been there? it's incredible). I've been to El Azteca and Plaza de Garibaldi, along with the ridiculous Mad 4 Mex, but I'm still not satisifed. Any suggestions? Does anyone know a place that has good batidos (or liquados) and tres leches?

Thanks, I've been meaning to try that place out. What's the price range like? I don't know if you've ever had the tres leches at Mixto or Tierra de Columbiana (I think the same person makes the desserts for both locations), but it's terrible. Just yellow cake drowned in condensed milk.

I think the appetizers are in the 4-8 range, entrees 10-18 or so... I like the chicken mole poblano, though the portion size can be small. All the appetizers I've had were good -- best to try a bunch of appetizers, I'd say. Oh, and it's BYO, you should know.

Service is hit or miss, but they have good mole. The patio is very nice in mild weather.

We had dinner last night at Rio Bravo at 11th and Washington. Big place with a dance floor and jukebox. There were only about 5 tables occupied (ranging from hispanics to asians to African-Americans to anglos -- quite a variety for 5 tables, now that I think of it). It bills itself as a seafood restaurant, so we tried the striped bass filet with garlic and peppers. Very good, but quite heavy on the garlic and a rather small filet. Served with sauteed carrots and celery, and white rice. We also tried two of the soups - the tortilla soup was pretty good, not great, and the caldo was expensive and not worth it. Nice idea (chicken, garbanzos, rice, and peppers) but the flavors didn't blend. It probably should sit a day or two -- it tasted as if they threw everything in and heated it up. Definitely not worth the $3.95 they were charging. The real bargain was the shrimp fajitas. Not the southwestern version at all. Lots of small fresh-tasting shrimp sauteed with lots of red and green bell peppers and onions and yummy spicing, with Spanish rice and beans. One very large and non-homemade tortilla came with it. It wasn't possible nor desirable to wrap up the shrimp in the tortilla -- it was great eating with a fork, and only about $8. When we sat down, the very friendly waitress put a plate of nachos on the table, and we also got a pasta soup for free (it might have come with the fish entree, but nothing on the menu said that, and she didn't say anything about it when we ordered two soups). We'll definitely go back and try other things on the menu (there is a large selection of ceviche, for example, that we might get along with the shrimp fajitas which are not to be missed).

Las Casuelas is my favorite by far. I agree their Tres Leches is outrageous. Their mole is very good but we liked it with the enchiladas. Zocola is very good as well but not byo and much more expensive with a very interesting menu.
