rarely does a saturday night find steve at home. this week not only was he at home, but friends from la and napa valley were here visiting as well. given that steve so rarely is home on the weekend we gave him the choice of cuisine for dinner and he immediately settled on chinese. so off to san wong it was.

we began with sizzling rice soup, the spectacle of the hot rice being poured into the enticing broth gave us a hint of the deliciousness to come.

we ordered well, everyone at the table being good eaters.

the soup was quickly followed by salt and pepper prawns, a daily special. the combination of the two was delightful, the shells of the prawns thin and easily crunched on. they were just the right size, two bites, just like a crawfish, head in the first, tail in the second.

i was feeling dubious about our guest's choice of lemon chicken but was happily suprized with the light lemony sauce filled with a delicate combination of sweet red peppers and small, not too sweet pieces of pineapple.

from the vegetable specials we chose pea sprouts, one of my favorite chinese vegies, both raw and cooked. these came lightly sauteed with slices of fresh button mushrooms, letting the grassy flavor of the sprouts shine.

for the vegetarian with us we chose the "family style" bean curd, triangles of fried tofu with a medley of vegetables, all bright and fresh, the flavors distinct and clear. this came on a bed of glass noodles in a light sauce.

finally, the joy of the evening to me, chicken chow fun. san wong makes delicious noodles and these made me one happy girl. wide and flat like papparadelle (sp) but lighter and with less of a gluten-y flavor. i had to have seconds of this along with a few more shrimp.

it was delicious, just as it was the last time i was there, perhaps it has just as much to do with the company, perhaps the company enriches the food, who's to say?

five of us ate dinner for $54 excluding tip, with 2 drinks.
