Does anyone remember this cake?
When I was very young (and don't ask!), my parents used to buy a lemon chiffon cake that came in a loaf shape and had chocolate frosting.
We lived near a Hanscom's and a Horn and Hardart Retail Shop, and sometimes shopped at Broad and Olney, though I don't remember a bakery there. We also were not far from Peter Pan and Bogoslafsky's, but it wasn't their style.
Does anyone remember that cake? Who sold it?
I know that I could figure out how to bake it, but I would love to know where we used to buy it.
One more puzzle to torture the brain!

It is now 9 years after this original post was written. I just saw this thread today. I too remember both Hanscom's and Horn & Hardart. Hanscom's had great stuff. Plus, they would sell their day-old stuff at bargain prices as well, which were not the least bit stale. I used to go to one right near the Read Terminal in center city.
About Horn & Hardart. I literally grew up on their food. They were all over the city in every neighborhood and they were inexpensive enough for my middle class family to go there almost every Sunday for dinner. I specifically remember the great aroma of different foods in the air as soon as you walked inside the door. It smelled like fresh coffee, chicken noodle soup and cinnamin buns all mingling together. Yum. I grew up eating their chopped sirloin for dinner practically every Sunday. Their desserts were great too. They made their own ice cream and it was the smoothest creamiest stuff you ever tasted. Too bad that all the great things that distinguished this city are gone.

Hey Sylvia, I've been thinking about Hanscom's for a long time now. I grow up with those bakeries close enough for me to ride a bus to get the butter cookies they use to make in shapes for Easter, Christmas and other holidays throughout the year. Yes, I do remember the lemon chiffon cake. Loved it! There us to be one of the bakeries on Chelten Avenue near Wayne. Until they closed, that was my special stop every pay day!!!! Wish there was at least one somewhere. Haven't had cookies like that in years. My aunt use to make them but she's gone too.

Hi Sylvia,
My husband worked for Hanscom Brothers Bakery in the 50's and 60's. He has loads of wonderful memories about what they baked and even what day they baked certain types of cakes. He especially remembers those orange chiffon iced cakes and those lemon chiffon loaf cakes and even the Hot fudge cake mentioned by Susie in her reply. During his time there he was the head cake mixer. He feels sure he has some of the old "MEGA recipes" but after much searching he has not been able to locate them. The cakes you mentioned definitely were from Hanscom's. He tells me there were 37 locations of Hanscom's Bakeries and one was at Broad and Olney so you surely got some of their cakes. -
Hi Sylvia. I don't specifically remember that cake but I remember Hanscom's and H&H vivedly. I grew up in the Jenkintown area and we were very good customers at Hanscoms. When I was little we used to buy a Choc Hot fudge Cake that had a very thin layer of marshmaoolw over a fudgey cake and topped with a choc icing. The instructions were to heat the cake and it was wonderful. I have searched for years for a recipe for that cake, to no avail. I just tried another recipe this evening but it just did not compare.
If you have any way to track that recipe I would be grateful.
Happy eating.
