A few months ago I believe I saw a reference to Trader Joe's opening in Center City...perhaps around 20th and Market? Is anyone aware of this?

Yes, was some discussion about a month or two ago. Since I am directly connected to this project, I have the following update: location is still to be the SE corner of the After Six/2121 Market St. building, and yes, there is still a lot of haggling about the terms of the lease. Included in the lease negotiations is the partial expansion of the building to the north, and the renovation/repair of Commerce Street.

If everything goes well, we may have a Trader Joe's in the springtime.

Be still, my heart! Such a wonderful prospect.

I'm still driving once in a blue moon to the Jenkintown or Route 73 Trader Joe's just to stock up on olive oil pack tuna and a very different kind of water pack white solid tuna--forgot the name of it. Won't miss that long drive!

To all those unfamiliar with Trader Joes: it's worth a wait. Sort of a cross between Whole Foods, an upscale gourmet market, and discount prices. Quality at a bargain. Best selections of gourmet type items you can't find at your local grocery. Dried fruit, unusual frozen items--don't get me started!

When you make the trek to Jenkintown/Abington to that Trader Joe's, you may want to check out the Zagara's in the shopping center next door. It's awkward to find at first, it is way around back. They have some interesting things as well, a lot more of the "gourmet" prepared foods type stuff, a large selection of fresh olives, and fresh meats, fish and poultry, with no hormones or antibiotics. Things that both they and Trader Joe's have are usually a bit higher priced at Zagaras. But generally I think their prices are on par or sometimes better than other stores. For example, they have Stonyfield Farm organic yogurt for 15 cents less than Acme or Genuardi's, and they have more flavors.

Re: Zagara's.. better move fast. There was article in yesterday's Inky. Safeway bought the 5 Zagara's. 4 were turned into Safeways and the Abington one is being closed permanently. No date was set. Trader Joe's really hurt them.

Now if only they would carry wine like they do in their CA stores.

I've been travelling to Clark, NJ for years now, just to shop at the Trader Joe's there, because they sell beer and wine in the north part of the state. They carry odd microbrews and some lesser known wine labels from the west coast, all pretty good stuff. SOME of their whole bean coffees are quite good too, especially their Winter Blend, sold in 24 oz cannisters.

Good imported pastas, interesting oils and snacks, and some exceptional frozen seafood, believe it or not, are what draws me to their stores. That, and the wacky, Hawaiian shirt atmosphere and helpful staff.

The selection at Trader Joe's changes all the time with the beers, but there have been CA microbrews, some from Minnesota, Illinois, and the Pac Northwest, some from Ohio, and some hard to find Czech beers too! Its always fun to see what's in the beer section.

Before anybody gets the wrong idea, let me point out that Trader Joe's doesn't carry A LOT of different beers. In the Westfield NJ branch (not Clark by the way), they have at most maybe 15 different brands. But, yes, out of those 15 there's always 2 or 3 you don't see anywhere else in NJ/PA. And they change them frequently. --Ken

update... i was at the trader joe's in abington last night, and i happened to mention the center city location to the cashier. he says they will open sometime in february (they are already asking staff to help open the store) :) it's a great store!

re: zagara's... NO!!! that is my second favorite store (next to trader joe's - better selection, but higher prices). Safeway has owned zagara's for quite some time (about 2 years ago safeway purchased genaurdi's entirely, and genaurdi's owned zagara's), so hopefully they won't change all of them (that little stretch in abington has a trader joe's, a zagara's, a whole foods and is only a few miles away from a genaurdi's - the best "regular" grocery store, imo)

I heard a rumor that Trader Joe's is looking to open a store in Phoenixville, PA. The town is going through a dramatic revitalization period and it woul be perfect. I also found a wonderful coffeehouse in Phoenixville called steelcity coffeehouse.
