Half-Day Cafe -- still self-destructing?

Don'cha hate it when a formerly wonderful trustworthy restaurant self-destructs?

The Half-Day Cafe, in Kentfield by the College of Marin, used to be Marin's best brunch bet. Had it all -- classy casual ambience, inventive menu, marvelous bakery goods, superb hashbrowns and weekend waiting crowds.

Last spring I heard it was headed the wrong way. In May, I went in on a weekday morning to see for myself. In some unclear way, the ambience had lost some luster. There were no more blackboard daily specials on muffins and scones. Someone had ignored the old axiom "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and screwed around with the menu.

I ordered scrambled eggs with hash browns and a muffin. The muffin was grotesque -- about 2/3 streusel and 1/3 muffin. The hash browns were inedible -- they weren't brown or crisp and were doused with some strange medicinal-tasting herb. The eggs looked great until I forked in some and crunched down on eggshell!

Anybody been there lately?

Had weekday lunch there a couple of weeks ago. Hard to ruin a veggie quesadilla, so I guess it was OK. Took a customer as well, he was hapy.

Can't speak for weekend fare. The place is there and safe enough when I need it.
