a lot of people like sansom st. oyster house between 15th and 16th on sansom, assuming you're open to center city.

haven't been there myself since cary neff took over as chef, and don't think i had oysters when i was there, to be honest.

but if i had a yen for oysters in philly, i'd go there.

acutally, the seafood restaurants in chinatown make good oysters also.
my favorite right now would either be tai lake or golden phoenix.
the first on 10th just north of cherry.
the second on race, just west of 9th.

steamed with ginger and scallion, somewhere around $2 per. they're usually larger than the ones seen elsewhere. don't remember where they're from.

Sansom Street Oyster House!
They have an excellent selection, and you can be assured that they are fresh.
The restaurant is much improved under Cary Neff.
We love oysters but are careful where we order them. This is the right place.

I'm assuming raw?

I second the Sansom Street suggestion for the best deal on raw oysters that I have found so far. They have at least a half-dozen varieties at any given time, always perfectly and freshly shucked.

(While i've heard some raves for the kitchen, I found the entrees rather average. Not bad, but there are other places to get fresh fish done relatively simply that i find more memorable.)

I assume Brassierie Perrier is still doing oysters as well? It's lovely, but *at least* twice as expensive as Sansom Street, and the atmosphere is a bit precious with snootiness for my taste.

I shouldn't be telling you, cause I don't want to fight with a crowd, but Schnockey's at 2nd just north of Washington is great. They usually have about eight to ten varieties of oysters. Great oldfashioned, no frills but clean and pleasant oyster house.

I've had great ones at Twenty Manning. It was part of a platter with some other things, so I'm not sure if you can order a dozen or so, but they were pretty terrific.
