mail-order beef/meat
I enjoy looking at the mail-order catalogs for Allen Brothers, Omaha steaks, and the like, but I never order from them, mostly because I find the prices outrageous. Yes, I will pay more for quality prime beef, but $50/lb? I don't think so. Something tells me I can get the same quality without all the foofala, but where? I'm in NE PA, Mountain Top, but I could drive just about anywhere and still be cheaper than the catalogs. So, those of you who buy prime beef, pork, and chicken, where do you get it?

I don't know if it is actually graded prime or not, (and don't care) but I buy my steaks and roasts at Sonny D'Angelo's in Philadelphia's Italian Market (9th Street just south of Christian on the east side of 9th).
Sonny dry ages his beef 20-30 days and cuts it to order. Another joy, seeing a professional butcher wield a knife.

Ditto Harry Ochs at the Reading Terminal Market, and it is USDA Prime.

Thanks for the suggestions Bob and Holly, we are planning to move to the city soon (living in the suburbs is not good for my sanity) and I have been wondering about butchers, too.
I echo SG's question, what kind of prices do they have at Sonny D'Angelo's and Harry Och's? Also, do you know if the meat is raised without hormones?
Thanks!

At Harry's, his best prime steaks go for somewhere around $11-12 / pound. Offhand, I don't know if they are hormone free, but I suspect it is. Just ask.
If hormone free is a genuine concern, shop at Fresh Fields. Generally I am not a big fan of the store, but I must admit, their red meats are considerably better than other supermarket meats I've had.

Thank you for the information. When we move to Center City (hopefully in a few months) we will try both Sonny D'Angelo's and Harry Och's and determine which we like best. It's nice to have a couple of good suggestions ready.
Yes, I know Fresh Fields sells hormone free meat, but we don't have one near us at the moment. It's always nicer to get meat from a butcher, though.

Holly,
What are prices for the dry aged steaks at Sonny D'Angelo's?
The only place I've seen dry aged steaks is at a rebranded upscale clemens market in brwyn mawr/villanova area, I forget the exact name. They're were listed at about $20 -25 / lb.

I'm guessing in the area of $10 a pound give or take a couple of bucks depending on the cut and Sonny's mood. Have to admit I've never asked.
But I've never felt like I'm paying more than I'd pay elsewhere.
A side benefit is that I can pick up a slap of Sonny's country pate and a few links of French garlic sausage.
Pictured below is Sonny working on a 2" thick TBone for me. Probably ran about $22.

A couple days ago, Giant had filet mignon in their meat case (unpackaged; you pick, they wrap) at 13.95/lb. 11.95 with their bonus card.
We grilled it for supper last night. Cut it with a fork, no waste, and superb flavor.
Sometimes we overlook the obvious...
