Rt 15 Restaurant Trail Diner
Many years ago I lived in Washington DC and Christmas time took us north to meet relatives from Central NY for exchanging presents. We always met at a place called the Trail Diner, along the 3 lane stretch of Rt 15 north of Harrisburg.
My post here is to try to find a recipe for a Cole Slaw, my guess is it was a "Dutch/Amish" recipe, served without ordering at the Trail Diner. It was just on the table when you got inside and sat down.
Does anyone here recall this slaw served or perhaps more appropriately, remember the Trail Diner ?
The slaw sour, yet sweet as well (if that's possible) was not made with a mayonaise type dressing. We always guessed at the recipe and it may well have been a family secret, but I wonder if anyone here would know the actual name of this slaw or could point me to a recipe or where I might find something very close.
The slaw was practically a "signature" item for the Trail Diner, many, many people knew of this delight. We gladly drove 180 miles for it and this Diner was there for many years from back in the 40's and on into the late 60's and early 70's at least, if it still exists. It has been more than 30 years since we were there the last time.
Any clues to the recipe for that slaw would be appreciated. Reply to this board and cc my address if you would, please.
Thank you

DEAR CRAIG:
I grew up in the Washington, DC, area in the 1960s, and before Interstate 81 was completed through Pennsylvania, we'd have to drive up along the Susquehanna River on Route 15 to visit my grandparents.
One favorite stop was the Trail Diner. Like you, I've often wondered whatever became of the place. It's still there, but it has been remodeled and expanded and it now known as Angie's Family Restaurant. It's near a little berg in PA called Duncannon. The best thing is, you walk in and realize it's the same old place, the food is fantastic, the little weird gift shop is there. Make the effort to find it, and who knows, you might be able to get that cole slaw recipe.
I am a MAJOR diner hound.
