Pittsburgh vegetarian???

igj Jul 25, 2001 01:23 PM

Moving to Pittsburgh and I am looking for suggestions for places where two vegetarians can go and order a reasonable meal without overlapping each other's choices. No chinese food please... Thanks!

Quiet Storm coffeehouse in Garfield is more vegan than vegetarian, if that's what you're looking for. For tasty vegetarian, there are also Amel's and Aladdin (both mid-eastern) and Abay (ethiopian) in addition to the suggestions offered above. Have also heard that Franktuary (formerly Hot Dogma) has an awesome veg dog.

Kaya in the strip district always has several veggie options in apps and entrees (caribbean influenced food), La Filipiano in Lawrenceville has a split filipino/thai menu with multiple veggie choices and a nice outdoor garden that is open in warm weather

I don't know if Indian is OK, but the lunch buffet at Tamarind in Greentree (the Oakland location is less good) has LOTS of really good vegetarian options, especially on Sunday. Udupi is an all veg S. Indian restaurant in Monroeville that's terrific (something of a dive, though) . Girasole in Shadyside, especially at lunch, has several great Italian vegetarian options. Quiet Storm Coffee House in Bloomfield is an all veg kind of a hippyish place, heavy on soy, but good veg diner-ype food. There's also a new place in Homestead called Karma on 8th that's all organic with numerous vegetarian choices. Haven't tried it yet but it looks promising.

Zenith on 26th St. in the Southside has a nice vegetarian brunch on Sundays I can vouch for. Plentiful choices of side dishes and desserts and about six entrees. A great deal at 10 bucks a head. Very good.

Karma on 8th is a great choice-- lots of vegetarian options that even a carnivore might order.

Is Karma still open? We went by there today between 4:30-5pm, and it had paper over the windows, looking like it had already closed up. Didn't get to try it, but it didn't seem like it would do that well in that location.

The East End Food Co-Op has a cafe inside. It's not pretty but it's cheap and delicious veggie food.
It's on Penn Avenue in a building complex called The Factory.

Mad Mex on Atwood Street has good Mexican food, and much of it can be made vegan.

I know you don't want Chinese, but Spice Island Tea House is a good pan-Asian restaurant, also on Atwood Street in South Oakland. All kinds of vegetarian stuff.

                Good luck!
