Having moved out to Centreville from DC a year ago, I have found a real lack of quality, non-chain resturants in the area. I'm not picky when it comes to type of cuisine, but I'd especially love to find a Chinese and/or BBQ place nearby (within 10 miles or so; Manassas or Vienna would work, too). Any suggestions?

We have always liked Milano's in the Giant plaza at Stone Rd and Braddock Rd. for their hearty portions of Italo-Greek staples -- their homemade salad dressing is great -- but last time I was over there I saw a sign that said "Under new management."

Anyone know how the new mgmt is doing?

There's also a sushi joint in that plaza that is supposed to be quite good.

Leah: It's not really hidden, but Payne's Restaurant on Lee Hwy is the breakfast spot of choice in the greater Centreville area.

Also, Jamie's General Bean coffee house next door is a great spot.

well you might be disappointed. the Yorkshire is a straight-up sysco-truck joint, pancakes and margarine and a bunch of hvac repair guys having a meeting in the back room. i like it pretty well myself now and then but it isn't really a destination imho.

Ha ha! Was it the frozen micro-wave bacon or the styrofoam plates? Better to drive down Rt. 28 to the Yorkshire and have fresh eggs and bacon on real plates. The Yorkshire isn't fancy but they are friendly and have good coffee.

I also recommend Tong Thai in University Mall, across Braddock Rd from GMU.

East Chateua in Vienna next to La Provence in the Magruder's center at Lawyers & Maple Ave is a very interesting Chinese! restaurant. The menu has SE Asian elements and is owned by the Cambodian family that owns La Provence. A very good hot & sour soup and many good chicken dishes.

I have not been there for a while, but Thai Star in the Fair Lakes Center down by the Best Buy used to be a very good Thai restaurant.

I'd been wondering what was up with the "chinese" restaurant next to La Provence with the non-chinese name. I had been suspicous of it until now. Thanks for the recommendation. Will check it out.

Other favorites: Authentic Korean at Soo Won Galbi (Rt. 29 Centreville) or Cho's (Rt. 50 Fairfax); Carrabbas (yeah a chain but a GREAT chain); Skorpios (Rt. 123 Vienna); Friends Kabob (Rt. 123 Tysons); Lebnan Zaman (Gallows Rd of Rt. 123); and Cenan's Bakery (Rt.123 Vienna). Also, the best chinese going is from Old Peking in Oakton (Rt. 123) and Luciano's there has a reliable New York-style pizza and tomato sauce (speaking as a NYC-born italian).

Just so you get a feel for our taste, we are not keen on Bone Fish (too fussy, too expensive, to limited a menu if you can't eat shellfish); don't like Red Rock Cafe much either (mediocre food and service -- really a bar);we enjoy Sweetwater about 1/2 the time (turning a filet mignon over on the grill DOES NOT make it medium-rare no matter how many times they try to say so -- rare to raw is obvious even to the untrained eye); and, we tired of the Vienna Inn when our then 4 year old noticed the men drinking beer for breakfast at 8:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning.

Taking a four-year-old to the Vienna Inn for breakfast is about as funny as the guys who have been sitting there drinking beer ever since the end of WWII. Do you know the history of that place? It's a real relic.

Besides, what's wrong with drinking beer at 8 in the morning? How do you know they're not on the night shift?

Oh, but we'd eaten there many times over many years -- we were 7 years in Oakton in the early 1990's before the McMansions were built. Then, there were plenty of kids/families eating at the Vienna Inn on weekend mornings. And, the WWII guys were getting up getting their own coffee (and mine, too, often as not.) But, this was different -- the vibe was changing -- It was shortly after the original owner died. And, the guys drinking beer at 8 am were in their late 30's -- not WWII vintage. (And, no egg, either.) Plus, we both grew up in "night-shift" kind of places -- these "boys" were not coming off a swing-shift but on a full-swing bender. Nope, the feel was much more post-steel plant-closing instead of the legendary small-town flavor (and characters) it always had. Haven't been back since.
