Wine Gums?
Anyone know where to buy wine gums in the Maryland/VA/DC area? A friend brought them for me from Canada, and I'm hooked. The Maynard or Rowntree ones, preferably.

Try The British Pantry; if you don't want to drive out there, you can order them online.

They may also carry them at the British importers in Clarendon. The names is something like "Classic Cigars and British Goodies" or vice versa. It's right across from the Clarendon Metro stop on Wilson Boulevard I believe.

That sounds like something that Arrowine on Lee Highway in Arlington would have. It would be worth a call. There's probably a phone number on the web site.

I have seen wine gums at the British Connection and Tea Room on South Royal Street in Alexandria, less than a block off King Street.
I have also seen them at Rodmans on Wisconsin Avenue in DC. Rodmans has one of the widest selections of European treats I have seen anywhere.

Unfortunately, you won't find them in the US anymore, not legally anyway. According to the proprietor of the British Goodies store in Clarendon, the FDA (?) has banned their import because of a particular food dye that is used in the sweets' manufacture. The additive ran afoul of some regulation or other and thus we can no longer enjoy them.
On another note, I think Maynard's no longer makes them. Their recipe was bought by Bassett's which now markets and sells them. For a while they were sold as Maynard's recipe but the last box I got from duty free didn't say a thing about Maynard's.
My wife thinks the taste has changed for the worst; it has but I don't think it's all that bad.
Best of luck.

I love Maynards Wine Gums, too. I've seen them at the British goods shop in Old Town Alexandria, though they were crazy expensive. I get them when I'm in New York at Economy Candy and I've also ordered them online. Ebay, even.
