I've found 4 restaurants that are open on Christmas Day.
Aquarelle
Dupont Grille
La Tasca
Neisha Thai

Two of the five members of our party have Alzheimer's and may behave eratically. The younger three would like to have a nice meal without paying an arm and a leg and the possibility of a scene. I'm leaning towards Neisha Thai in DC since it's less formal than Aquarelle. Any thoughts? Dishes to recommend?

To get a pretty good list of restaurants to choose from which are open Xmas Day, I'd also try the Open Table reservation service. While by no means definitive, they'll only list restaurants which are open when you make your reservation query.

Given that it's a holiday, I think you'll find more rambunctious small children at places you normally wouldn't. Any scene created by your party would blend into similar scenes that my 3- and 6-year old can create in a restaurant.
