Anyone have any info on this?

Van Ness / UDC... drove by it the other day and saw my favorite BBQ joint shut down. Renovations, or... is it dead?

A friend put it very well to me last night.

"They had finger food (ribs), in a classy-setting (the restaurant did look a little upscale), in a kind of crappy neighborhood. Bad market research."

I hate to admit, because I loved the damn place, but I think she's right.

Don't quote me, but I heard that the official line is that the place is being "revamped"-- perhaps into something more casual oriented. I don't know why that wouldn't be a good location though. That strip seems to have a much better all day population than the strip close to the Cleveland Park metro.

I have never known why, but my wife and I have joked for 15 years about restaurant closures in that strip. I think it's lack of night-time foot traffic and parking difficulties.

When I used to live over there, we always joked that it was due to the large number of elderly people in the big hi-rise buildings, who don't go out to eat that much vs the yuppies in Cleveland Park.

But you're right, that stretch of Connecticut seems to be a death zone for all but the most basic restaurants (the Chinese carryout has stayed for 6+ years and seems to do okay).

I'm wondering how that Epicurious place is doing. They've got a large space, but in the evenings, I rarely see more than a few people in there. The hot bar is pretty good I think.

It was a strange concept--really good smoky bbq in a fancy setting. Who wants cloth napkins with messy bbq ribs??
