According to the Centreview fishwrap, a new Korean-style mini-mall called Grand Plaza has opened near the Old Centreville Crossing Shopping Center and is slated to include a "Korean-style rice cake parlor."

This is monumental news. Rice cakes are the greatest form of pasta ever invented -- even better than chow fun -- and they are hard to find. GrandMart once carried some Korean instant soup bowls with rice cakes but when I exhausted my supply and went back for more I couldn't find them. 8>(

I have gone to Chinese restaurants in Boston and ordered what I thought were rice cakes only to be served another kind of noodle. Then I heard that one of the stalls at the Hong Kong Eatery in Chinatown made a fantastic rice cake stir fry dish. I tried drawing a rice cake finally just asked the proprietor to bring out several kinds of noodles until she brought out a rice cake. When I went back to that place on my next visit to Boston, the stall was gone. 8<(.

Ahh the joys of chowhounding.

Here's a link to a rice cake guide.

it seems like a "rice-cake parlor" suggests that they are going to sell desserts. There are a lot of Korean desserts made from rice, even a big "cake"-like thing made from rice that I used to eat a lot. A bunch of little bakeries sell these Korean desserts so it seems likely that this rice cake parlor is a dessert place. So maybe this place isn't going to sell the noodle-like rice cakes you are thinking of? Although if you go to a Korean grocery I'm pretty sure you'll be able to find the rice cakes you are thinking of, frozen in really big plastic bags.

Oh I hope that's not the case. I have tried some delicious-looking Korean desserts. Not my cup of green tea.

GrandMart sells the big bags of rice cakes and I actually made one of the dishes from that rice cake website I posted earlier. But I'd much rather have the pros make them for me. Rice cakes go from rubber to glue in seconds -- I ended up tasting 20 or so to make sure I didn't overcook them.

FYI - I had a delicious dish of rice cakes with pork and vegetables at Joe's Noodle House in Rockville. They are quite dense.

Another FYI, I had a soupy stew of pork, tofu, and rice cakes at Woomi in Wheaton. But I must admit that I ordered it for the pork and tofu - I don't like rice cakes! (it was very good, once I removed the rice cakes)
