This is a charming and cozy little place in the Castro (18th and Diamond). I asked about this place here a while ago and the general opinion was that it was above average to good. I totally concur.

Had a well made buckwheat crepe appetizer stuffed with crabmeat (nice sweet crab flavor) and oysters mushrooms (good textural interest, but the flavor was light enough so that it didn't interfere with the crab.). The creamy sauce that came with it was dotted with with pop and sparkle of what looked like tobiko (flying fish roe).

Entree was a generous portion of well seared duck breast. The sauce was a little heavy with soy sauce and maybe some red wine but the duck breast was crying out for something fruity. Fortunately, there was a little salad of alfafa sprouts with a great citrus dressing that did the job. The raw green veins of sprouts and the sharp dressing did a great job of brightening the duck when eaten together. The mashed potatoes on the dish was a tad too buttery but not a disaster.

Had a very sweet and syrupy pineapple upside down cake for dessert. The cake was slightly powdery (a minus) but the galagal ginger flavor was creative and delicious (a plus). The scoop of coconut ice cream was good on its own but didn't have much to say in light of the overwhelming sweetness.

On the whole I like the place because it was somewhat charming and intimate. The food was not bad and not overly ambitious in an Eos kind of way. Prices were par for the food, most expensive entree at $21, other entrees mostly around $17-19.

  1. Thanks for the review. I have to say I'm having a little trouble with the concept of mashed potatoes being "too buttery" though (g).
