Visiting Baltimore & D.C. this summer. Looking for the best place for crabs. I have always been partial to Gunnings in Brooklyn, but haven't been there in years. Is it still as good as I remember? Are there any other places significantly better? What are the prices these days? Thanks.

If you are going to be in Baltimore I would definitely head to Obrycki's in Fells Point. Excellent crabs! Not sure what their prices are this year. I think they have a website.

I don't share the distaste that many Hounds seem to have for Obrycki's, but you should be aware that the crabs there come with a black-pepper seasoning rather than the traditional red Old Bay stuff.

But how do they taste? They sound interesting.

Old Bay's what I grew up with in MD. I'm a native, but people down south have been talking about this place. They say I need to go there and bring them back a few. I just want to find a great place to buy soft and hard shell crabs to put on ice and bring back to North Carolina. Any suggestions?

There are 2 Gunnings, the one in the old building and then the other Gunnings off of route 100 in that shopping center. I heard that the shopping center one was way better.

I'm partial to Cantler's in Annapolis. They're right on the water and the crabs are fantastic.

I second the recommendation for Cantler's. We're not too impressed with the other food options there (except the hushpuppies), but the crabs are first-rate.

The original Gunnings (recipes and Family) moved out to the location off of Rte 100 in Hanover, MD...
You may also want to try Bills Terrace Inn on Eastern Ave in Essex, or Costa's on North Point Rd in the Dundalk area...
A Dozen Crabs can run anywhere from $20.00 a dozen up to $70.00 a dozen .....

I haven't been to Gunnings in years so I can't help you with which places are better (though friends of mine went to Kelly's last weekend and said that the crabs were great), but I can help you with prices.

These days (hold on to your hat) mediums are $50-60 and jumbos are $70-ish. At least that's what I've been pricing at restaurants.

Take out probably a little cheaper.

I grew up in Baltimore but haven't lived here for a very long time. I'm taking some friends on the tour tomorrow and thought we'd go to Gunnings on Hanover St. but they apparently closed not long ago. Phone disconected. I'm now desperate for a similar place. Does anyone know L.P. Steamers?
