This has been a problem in the past for me. The problem is the cucumber, generally. A lot of places have Pimm's. If you have a nice waiter/bartender, they'll usually get a cuke from the kitchen if you ask nicely.

I have achieved full success on the Pimm's cup at the Mayflower, Morton's, Mendocino Grill, and Cafe Deluxe. It's become a more trendy thing, though, so you might be able to find one on the cocktail menu of a trendier place. Maybe you can get them at a lot of places--I don't order them all that often because I've gotten used to the "no".

It's a quirky veddy British drink, based on a bottled blend of gin, quinine, and a blend of secret herbs and spices (just like Kentucky Fried Chicken). It's properly served with a long slice of cucumber in the glass. I was first introduced to Pimm's at the (no longer) Gaylord, an Indian restaurant on Connecticut Avenue, just north of Dupont Circle.

1 part pimm's
2 parts ginger ale
a squeeze of lemon
floating cucumber slice

As with a julep, the cucumber is there for smell as much as taste. Very refreshing in weather such as we're having now.

That's how I used to make them until I had them at Napoleon House in New Orleans. Substitute the ginger ale for equal parts lemonade and 7-UP. DON'T use Sprite as it's too sickly sweet. Less spicy than the ginger ale, but I find it much lighter and a nicer balance of sweet/sour.

Ooh la la. Good find. Thanky. This is much better than sitting two blocks away at Morton's and trying to persuade the bartender to go back to the kitchen and get a cucumber. :)

MANY years ago I had a Pimm's # TWO! (scotch-based)cup at Mr. Henry's in Georgetown. But, according an internet search, they only still make Pimm's # 1 (gin-based)and Pimm's # 6 (vodka-based).
Too bad!
