Road Trip - What's in the Ultimate Cooler?

OK so here's the deal. Myself, Michael & some friends have rented a minivan and we are driving to Baja (Mexico). It got me thinking about all those road trips my family took when I was a child. I have now vowed to pack the ultimate cooler - some classics that my Mom made (pimento cheese sandwiches), some things Mom always refused to provide (unlimited pixie sticks), some new stuff that travels well (organic fruit, roasted eggplant dip from farmers market).

Here's my question to you...what would be in your ultimate cooler? The reason I posted it on the SF board is because I'll need your sources for ingredients, prepared products and produce.

Lastly, if there is any place we should stop on the way, let me know.

  1. Gotta have fried chicken. Also, don't forget smoked meats (duck breast, sausages, etc) that are delicious and keep well. Also, check out an igloo cooler that plugs into your lighter and cools to 40F below ambient temperature. You can get them at any sporting goods store. They're great because your food doesn't get wet.
