When I was in Miami, I ate a Japanese place that had the low tables for traditional dining, and right next to them tables for Western dining. My kids wound up at their own table, which they found enormous fun.

What places in this area have the same seating arrangement?

If I remember correctly (it has been many years)Shiro-ya near Georgetown has tatami seating. Matsuri in Herndon definitely does. Matsuri has the advantage of offering a genuinely good kid's menu, primarily consisting of Japanese food appropriate for kids.

Our chowpup is a huge fan of the kid's non-raw sushi platter: crabstick, omlette, and shrimp nigiri and california roll.

I just sat at one of the Japanese-style tables at Sushi Taro over on 17th Street in Dupont. They have these types of tables for parties from 2 people to 6 people.

If you don't want to sit at a low table, their are Western-style tables very very close to the low ones (essentially next to them -- but the low tables are one step up).

Last week, I had an excellent tofu appetizer, some tasty pumpkin and asparagus tempura, and of course, good sushi.

Beware though -- in case you have chowpups with you -- long waits on some nights (and I'm not sure about their reservation policy). I waited for a little over an hour last Friday night.

Makoto does not have tatami mat seating but it is probably the most authentic Japanese food in town. On top of that, the place has a feel of a typical restaurant in Japan with seats at a bar with your legs dangling into a well. At relatively low tables, you have wooden seats with no back (not the most comfortable thing in the world) but much more authentic again.
