cupcakes! I finally pasted together the entire list of peoples' 5 favorites...the stuff they would seek out if an asteroid were coming to hit the earth etc. etc.

Good kind opinionated Chowhounds responded in December with excellent suggestions for me to try this year. Anyone looking for a cheat sheet (this is DC heavy, per my request, so suburban eaters shouldn't take offense. I have car and traffic issues. Serious road rage.)

Clip and save below.

1)Tasting Menu at Yanyu (counts as one because you only have to say one thing to the waiter...) esp. the Peking Duck. (about $50/person)
2) Seafood Udon noddle soup at Teaism on 8th Street NW. about $8 (throw in salty oat cookie)
3) Garlic string beans (ask for extra garlic) at Pacific Cafe, the vietnamese place on capitoil hill (Penn) next to Fragers hardware. Happy to report they seem to be doing pretty good business. $10
4)Shrimp dumpling soup at full kee. no noodles. $6
5)blueberry buckwheat pancakes, Eastern Market. Saturdays only. $5 (also hameggncheese sandwich, I add quickly so as not to violate my own rule)
Number 6 would be the baba ghanoush at Anatolia, except Anatolia changed to a new reataurant and the Baba is not the same, to my everlasting disappointment.
Number 7...cinnamon donuts at Reeves Bakery, 13th and G.
2)	1. Pho- #15 at Pho 75 (Roslyn, VA)
2. Pepita crusted salmon at Kinkead's (DC)
3. Kubideh with rice at Moby Dick (Bethesda)
4. Hong Kong style wonton soup-no noodles at Full Kee (DC)
5. Ribs at Urban BBQ (Rockville)

3)	1) The eggplant stuffed with crab and shrimp at Panetteria in downtown Bethesda (very homey and comforting in a tomato/mozzarella sauce similar to Eggplant Parmesan).

2) The Tiffin hors d'oeuvres plate at Tiffin on University Blvd. in Langley Park. A great assortment of juicy chicken tandoori, Indian sausage, a Samosa, and three other breaded items. This makes for an excellent appetizer plate to share with 3-4 people (ample!).

3) The turkey with all the trimmings at Corduroy restaurant on K St. at 12th in the Sheraton 4 Points hotel. Was served for Thanksgiving. Haven't had a better Thanksgiving dinner with that entree since Mom's and Mom is a darned good cook!

4) The smoked, grilled lobster served with lightly fried, garlic spinach at DC Coast restaurant and at Ten Penh.

5) The turkey sausage at Celebrity Delly (I know "deli" is misspelled there, but that's the way they spell it) on Tuckerman Lane off of Seven Locks Road in the Cabin John shopping center. Moist and nicely spiced with thyme.
4)	1) chicken and yucca at Senor Chicken on Mt. Vernon Avenue
2) duck cigars at Ten Pehn
3) Key lime tart or tarte au citron (can't choose), brownies, rosemary bread, balck olive bread, green olive and sage bread, roast beef sandwiches and panini at Firehook
4) Cosmopolitan at the Round Robin Bar at the Willard Hotel
5) pho at Pho Viet Flare in the Van Dorn/Edsall PLaza shopping center
5)	salty crispy chicken at Joes Noodle House.

6)	H&D (fried chicken)
12th and Florida NE.

Go on Sunday around 11ish, folks are still in church and there's no line :)
7)	1. Caesar salad at Palena (and the German Chocolate cake, too)

2. Seafood Gumbo at Cashion's.

3. Smoked Salmon, Naan and Raita at Teaism (Dupont Circle branch)

4. Anchovies and olive martini (it's an appetizer not a drink) and any fish entree at Pesce.

5. Chocolate chip brioche bread pudding at Little Fountain Cafe.
8)	1) Roast chicken at Palena cafe
2) Salmon ceviche at Oyamel (OK, 3 stops into VA on the Yellow line, but worth it)
3) Souvlaki sandwich at the Greek Deli on 19th
4) Fresh doughnuts during brunch at Tabard Inn
5) Soft shell sandwich at CF Folks (found it to be superior to Breadline's this season)
9)
- Sweet and spicy salmon soup: Nam Viet (sorry, followed by the curried squid dish)

- Chorizo Burrito: El Charro (El Charritto Caminante for those who didn't know the cart)

- Pollo: Many places, Pollo Rico by default (though I wish they would serve yuca, at least)

- Spicy squid salad: Thai Square

- Wings: Bungalow Billiards
10)	1) Hanger Steak at Montmartre
2) Pork Belly and Beans at Corduroy
3) Meatloaf (and biscuits) at Colorado Kitchen
4) Hunkar Begendi (The lamb shank and eggplant/cheese puree dish) at Zaytinya
5) Il Blue Rossini, XXI Secolo (the signature beef filet and foie gras dish) at Maestro
11)	1) Tuesday Lamb shank special at Kabob bazaar

2) Thursday night chicken special at Mandalay (dinner only)

3) Seafood gumbo at Johnny's Half Shell (lunch only)

4) Seafood soup at La Sirenita (ask for SPICY)

5) Softshell crab sandwich (which comes with fries) at Breadline - June thru August (lunch only)
12)	1. Potato skins and prime rib at Prime Rib (if you order both at same time, it only counts as one, right?)
2. Calves liver at Lavandou
3. Cobb salad at Wollensky Grill
4. Singapore noodle soup at Raku - Dupont Circle
5. Rotisserie chicken with fries at El Pollo Rico in Wheaton, 2541 Ennalls Ave.
13)	1. shrimp ceviche at guajillo in rosslyn.

2. the torta sandwich at el pollo sabrosa in mt.pleasant.

3. tea-smoked lobster and crispy fried spinach at ten penh and dc coast.

4. the "kit kat"-like chocolate hazelnut bar dessert (originally by michel richard of citronelle, also available at corduroy)

5. crispy fried oysters with a chipotle remoulade dipping sauce at firefly. yum.

6. the buffalo wings at tonic in mt. pleasant. the best wings i have had in DC so far. spicy, saucy, crispy.
14)	1. Pokori at Rita's. (Fritters with pickled tamarind sauce.)

2. Carne Deshilada at El Rinconcito II.

3. Whole croaker in red sauce - choose plaintains and black eyed peas for sides - at Akosombo.

4. Hue Spicy beef noodle soup at Nam Viet.

Great post. Since I've only tried a three things out of all those lists, I have some work to do in 2005!!!

Since I didn't start poking around here til late december, I'll add my belated thoughts:

1) Kaddo Borawni at Helmand in Baltimore

2) A late August/early September evening spent stuffing myself with all you can eat crabs at Cantler's in Annapolis, or better yet out of an overstuffed paper sack on a friend's deck. I am partial to the crabs at Tangiers for that.

3) A sub from the italian store in Arlington...probably the milano but it would depend on my mood. I am really in the mood for a milano at this very moment, so this might not make the list on another day.

4) Saturday buffet lunch at Minerva in fairfax.

5) Gaeng Keow Waan...not sure where I would get it around here if I had to pick one place, but it's not an easy dish to mess up, I'm still finding my way around here so if anyone is a big fan of this one and knows a place that does it superbly, let me know!

(i left off what would have been a sure entry in the list...a leg and thigh from El Pollo Rico...due to the fact that it had already been mentioned).

And, if this counts...a meal at Charleston.
