Does anyone have any info on what looks like a new BBQ place in College Park in what was the Little Tavern building?

I think it is called JR's Roadhouse (or RJ's, or some initials) but I was driving by last night and could neither see it well or stop.

Thanks very much,

It is indeed JR's Roadhouse, opened by some of the folks who opened Lupo's across the street.

I've been there a couple of times. I wanted it to be good, but it just isn't. Despite a menu of "barbeque", nothing there is actually smoked -- it's cooked in an oven. A couple of the sauces seem to contain significant amounts of *shudder* liquid smoke to cover up this defect. The meat is usually tasteless. Most of the food is kept under heat lamps. Hush puppies, though fried to order, seem to have come pre-frozen from Sysco.

I wish this was real barbeque, but considering the audience this place is catering to (U.Md students, who seemingly have no standards), it's unsurprising that they don't aim that high. It's open until very late on weekends, in order to lure post-binge students.

Thanks for passing judgement on about, oh, 35,000 people. Good thing you knew the likes and dislikes of each and every one of us before you decided to talk.

I am a resident of College Park, and outside of 2 or 3 places that I eat at or would recommend, this town is truly a culinary wasteland.

This true only to a point.

Downtown College Park is pretty sad. There's a new chain sandwich shop every month, it seems, and they are all filled with students. Hence my original remarks on the general culinary standards of college students.

There are a few worthwhile places in the city proper, namely the aforementioned Jerk Pit, the Food Factory, and the Berwyn Cafe.

Just outside of CP there's Pho 88, Gah-Rahm, Pepper Pot, the Korean Noodle place (sorry, the name escapes me), York Castle, Costa Alegre, and Taqueria Tres Reyes (and my guilty fave Popeye's).

There is a wide variety of options just a few miles away in both Langley Park and Bladensburg, and, just a little further out, Wheaton.

I agree. If you're willing to drive 5 minutes in any direction, you can eat pretty well.

Also, I would add Lupo's in downtown CP and Franklin's 5 minutes down Rt. 1.
