I finally got to try this place. i had a cold so my taste buds might have been off a bit, but nevertheless:

1. The burger (actually two patties on one bun) seemed overcooked. They don't ask how you want them cooked. Definitely pile on the free toppings.

Note: I got a bacon cheeseburger ($4.89) and the bacon was still crispy when I got home to eat the burger. That is no small feat.

2. The fries were outstanding. I got a large ($3.89)and it was truly gigantic. After they fill your cup they keep dumping fries in the bag.

I started eating them while I was driving home. They were fresh, hot, and crispy. Thrasher's fans will love these bad boys.

Always order small fries from 5 Guys, even if you are sharing with a friend--you really get the same amount large or small. They also serve the best burgers I've ever eaten. Great stuff.

You may want to order small fries *per person* at the Five Guys on H between 8th and 9th. We've tried them twice, and both times we've been pretty short on the hot fry action, especially when ordering to share. We usually go to the one near Howard University, where you get enough fries to bathe in no matter what you do.

It was spotty when it first opened, but the Howard location is nowadays much more reliable than the Chinatown location in general.

I have been similarly disappointed with overcooked burgers at 5 Guys. I think as a matter of policy they cook everything well. You'd think that a burger shop that places such emphasis on its quality ingredeints would have enough confidence in their product to cook your burger to order.

Yep, they tell you where the spuds they turn into your fries were harvested (mine came from Rigby, Idaho) -- maybe the cattle ranchers are embarassed?

I was very surprised when the cashier didn't ask me how I wanted my burger cooked, so I should not have been surprised about how overcooked it was.
