hey,

Just moved to Alexandria and would like to find some good south-of-the-border places. Any suggestions? Also, has anyone tried Las Delicios restaurant off Glebe road? I've always wondered if it was any good.

Was not thrilled with Las Delicias, the Salvadoran place at Glebe and Walter Reade. Taqueria El Charrito Caminente in Arlington is number one for this type of food in NoVa. About four stools only. Get the goat taco. If Lillian's is still in the S. Arlington/ north of Del Ray area, then that is one of your best bets for Salvadoran sit-down in Virginia.

I did try the peruvian chicken place (Senor Chicken, I believe) next to the Popeyes on Glebe. Its pretty good. But still no match for El Pollo Rico in Wheaton.

Pollo Rico has a location in Arlington, between Clarendon and Virg. Square.

Get thee quickly to El Charro (El Charrito Caminante) and while the goat is good, the chorizo is better (his recipe straight from the packing house).

Also, boy where to start - Arlington is rich in offerings from south of Texas (especially south of Mexico)

El Puerto on Col. Pike near Walter Reed (peruvian)
Cuzco west of Bailey's on Col. Pike (peruvian)
Aclacatl on Col Pike near 4 mile run (salv.)
The mexican place west of Ballston at the bottom of the hill on the north side of the street
Many places on 29 in north arlington
Del Ray - a few chicken places, others.

A few taco trucks are spread all through the area

Lilian's Restaurant

The guy who started it is Bolivian. He began on Pershing Dr. in N. Arlington and expanded to this location. The N. Arlington one has since closed. Started off as being Salvadoran (that's where the kitchen staff came from) but added some Bolivian specialties as he went along. It's been a while for me, so not a recent rec.

Genuine Tex-Mex tamales are really to find in the DC area. More often the tamales are of the Salvadoran style....and markedly different. I've got a friend who brings them back in a cooler from Austin a couple of times a year.

now that i think about it, the tamales up here do seem different. i've tried them at the salvadorean places in Wheaton and alexandria. the corn meal seems greasier or something. Does anyone know why?
