Um....fruitcake. Where can I get a great one, locally?

No, not a joke. I am having a serious fruitcake craving. I don't know that I have eaten fruitcake for years, but I am remembering something sent to my parents by some business acquaintance that came in a 12" tin with a Currier and Ives image on the front.

Now, I am not looking for that specific fruitcake, but in case anyone is familiar with said cake, well, then you would know the style of fruitcake I am craving right now: lots of fruits and nuts, held together with a touch of almost transluscent cake, and lots of bourbon.

Can anyone suggest a local source (I am guessing that the fruitcake at Safeway, looking roughly like a loaf of cocktail rye, is not going to do it for me) for a superlative fruitcake? Any ideas?

Go to any Costco at Christmas time, and you'll get a great fruitcake. Makes me hungry just thinking about it.

Eddie's of Roland Park- they make their own. Not sure if there are any still left, but worth a try- on Roland Ave south of Northern Parkway

I LOVE fruitcake and stock up, vacuum pack and freeze for special occasions or a special treat throughout the year. I was once resolved to eating Safeways fruitcake due to others cakes with the unsavory citrus rind, however, the past two years I've moved on
Try WHOLE FOODS MARKET, there are a few stores in Virginia. They sell what I consider one of the best. No pickled colored cherries, green pineapple, preserved colored citrus rind, fructose syrup, hydrogenated cooking oils, etc.. Instead, true sweetened fruit, currants, nuts, dates, candied pineapple, cranberries, gold and dark raisins, papaya in what tastes truly like cake, not flour baked in syrup.

While these aren't exactly local in that the store is not in the metro area, the fruitcakes from Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville Virginia are excellent. I've ordered often and given many as gifts and most fruitcake haters have loved it. Very moist and full of flavor. Order two, soak one in bourbon and let age for 6 months.

Delivery is very quick, or you could make a roadtrip to Berryville. I think these have rum and brandy instead of bourbon. Link below.

              Thanks,

              K

Have you tried their creamed honeys? They look wonderful.

No. I had those chocolate covered fruitcake slices but didn't like them that much. I stick to just the cakes.

                  Thanks,

I bought one there a couple of years ago and found it to be disappointing and dry. The top was moist but about an inch down it was dry and tasteless.

                  I order online now.

I'm sorry I could not be of help. If you come eventually come across one you like, let me know. The WHOLE FOODS version is the best I know of that is most natural and wholesome. As a fruit cake lover, I am willing to try others.
