Where can I find Tile Fish?
I have an obscure query for Chinese Chowhounds and other officionados of Chinese food. One dish I miss from mainland China and definately cant cook myself is something called War kuai yu or Tile fish. Basically it is a whole fish which has had all the external flesh deboned and enscribed with a tile pattern. It is then deep fried and served with a fantastic sweet ginger and tomato sauce.The dish is originally from Sichuan but I have found it in restaurants in Bei jing as well. Does anyone know where I may find it in the bay area? Are there any great sichuanese restaurants where I may find it?
I don't have the Little Sichuan (San Mateo) menu handy, so I can't tell you if they have this dish, but that would be a good place to start. I've been to better places elsewhere, but Little Sichuan probably the best Sichuan place I've heard of and eaten at in the Bay Area.
Sam Lok is the Sichuan place that I would pick if I had to eat in the SF proper - it;s located in Chinatown.
Perhaps you can call these places and ask if they have that dish or are willing to make it for you.
