You know, a good sized heap that are lightly crunchy on the outside and still sweet, plump and bursting with ocean or bay juices on the inside.

The best fried oysters I've ever had in the area can be found at Johnny's Half Shell in Dupont Circle. You can have them as an appetizer, or if you go at lunch, you could have one of their Fried Oyster po' boys.
They also have great crabcakes !

I will second Johnny's Half Shell. Kinkead's has some awfully good ones, too, though they're more expensive than Johnny's I'm fairly certain.

Oysters on the half shell are excellent at Old Ebbitt Grill, but I don't think I've ever had them fried there.

I second this suggestion. And while we're on the subject, Old Hickory Grill place doesn't get much mention on here. I find it pretty dependable. My husband really likes the meatloaf.

When I first read your post, I thought yor recommended Broad Street Grill in F.C. They had great fried oysters in the very beginning when Gillian Clark was cooking there. Those days are long gone, however, as the current overall quality demonstrates.

The last time I had them at Firefly, they were quite good, with a very nice chipotle tartar sauce.

Johnny's Half Shell is also a good suggestion.

The best I've had recently were at Acacia in Richmond, which is a bit far to go for an oyster, but if you're in the neighborhood...

The best I've had recently have been at Firefly, Legal Seafood, and Sea Catch. In earlier seasons I've had good luck at Mcormick and Schmick and The Georgetown Seafood Grill which is now Fin, but I understand they have kept some of the previous recipes.

Yes to Firefly! Really, I think it is the best thing on the menu -- along with the fries.

Well, best on the food menu, anyway. A great and interesting wine menu at Firefly, quite reasonably priced.

You know, this thread made me go ahead and head to Johnny's Half Shell for lunch yesterday... I had BBQ Shrimp and Grits, (Swimming in butter - a little too much, but still good), a fried oyster po' boy w. fries, and a coconut sorbet (it was a crapshoot - coconut sorbet??? - but it turned out to be amazing.)

As for the oysters... you know, I had never really liked fried oysters before. But damn, that was a great sandwich. Crispy, crunchy, and smooshy in all the right places.
