Hello Everyone...

Thanks again for all the great suggestions. We had our first great meal in Baltimore this past weekend thanks to your suggestions. We tried the Brewers Art and it did not disappoint. My husband had the buffalo short ribs which melted off the bone. I had the dumpling squash filled with rissoto, which was delicious but not as good as the short ribs. We both had an excellent cosmo which was greatly appreciated after a day at the hospital. On our way out of Baltimore we stopped at the Attman's Deli for some sandwiches, living in NY we consider ourselves deli snobs but we were thrilled with the corned beef, our only gripe was that the rye bread was a little too soft to hold up to the sandwich. Also that they had pork at the restaurant which is considered a unthinkable in NYC but all in all we would go back, it's right on our way out of the city. We had one lunch at the Lexington Market, a place that makes only turkey, with stuffing, real mashed pots and veg only $4.95, worth double the price I think for such a 'home cooked' meal.

Our one disappointment was a lunch at the John's Hopkins cafeteria which was terrible. Is the UM Hospital cafteria near John's Hopkins/Kennedy Kreiger area?

I've made a little booklet for myself with all your suggestons, I think I'll make a few copies for other families at the hospital. Thank you SO much for all your suggestions. We will be in Baltimore every weekend for the next few months so I hope to try many more of the recommended restaurants.

I have one additional question- my in-laws are coming to visit my daughter and my husband would like to take them for seafood. Does anyone have an opinion about "Legal Seafood" near the harbor? I would send them to Arthur Treachers :) but he loves them so he wants something nice.

Thanks again,
Sandie

glad we could be of help. hoping we can make things just a bit easier for you.

legal seafoods is, well, legal seafoods. very consistent. but for the best seafood in b'more, i would suggest going to soigne (over just a bit past federal hill). that or the black olive (in fells point). soigne does their seafood in an asian fusion style; black olive does theirs more simply with greek notes. you can get legal anywhere, but these two restaurants are more idiosyncratic. both are very close to where you are.

much better than arthur's.

let us know if we can help. continued best wishes.

For a more traditional seafood experience (and not quite as expensive as other options) try Mama's on the Half Shell in Canton. It's somewhat new, is a really pretty dark-wood bar/restaurant and has focuses on seafood.

always glad to hear when people enjoy the brewer's art - one of my favorite places to drink, too.
as for attmans, you chose very well. its the closest b-more can get (pork-inclusion aside) to resembling a true NY deli.

as for seafood, it depends on what you're looking for. i totally agree about mama's/half shell being a more traditional seafood experience. black olive/soigne are both incredible (especially soigne), but are more in the realm of fine-dining atmosphere.
as for legal, its good, but as was mentioned, can be found anywhere as a chain. if you were planning on staying that close to the harbor, i'd probably choose mccormick and schmicks (another high-end chain) over legal seafoods. hope all is well and you can thank everyone who replied by continuing to report back on your weekend choices. all the best....

The UM Hospital is close to Ronald McDonald House - On S. Greene between Baltimore St. and Lombard St., with the entrance about half-way between the two.

At Hopkins there is the main cafeteria which is standard awful, but there is also a much (much!)better one that is located on the second level of the outpatient building - Grille something - but it isn't open in the evenings. Also, they have a full-service restaurant called the Tower Terrace off main hospital lobby that is supposed to be more up-scale. It has carry-out if you need to do some waiting (and who doesn't at a hospital?)

Continued good wishes!

I just wanted to wish you and your family the best of luck. We just finished up my sister's treatments in NYC at Sloan Kettering so I have a small inkling of how you are feeling right now. I will be saying a few extra prayers for you.

I think your idea of making copies of your booklet for others is a great one. Maybe the RMcD House would like to have a copy as well.

I put a small booklet together for some of the patients & their families with food, pharmacies (especially the 24 hour ones!), and the like. I got all the food recs from the NYC Chowhounds, and they couldn't have been more wonderful. The other patients and their families were so thankful to have the information. My sister's doctor still gives the information out to families staying in NYC for treatments.

Wishing you all the best.

RG

P.S. We stayed at the Inn at Henderson's Wharf when we were at Hopkins. The hotel is SUPER wonderful & you can usually get a $165/night special rate when you mention that you are a patient at JH.
