Ever walk down King Street and see a guy standing around in a Scottish kilt? Old Town mainstay Scotland Yard has closed its door -- the owners are retiring says an article in a local circular. According to the Planning Commission docket, a new place called "Hazel's" is going in. Anyone know anything about this?

This is the second longtime restaurant to shut down in recent months. Bullfeathers on King near Union was shuttered to make way for another much-needed Irish pub/restaurant in Old Town

Aaaaaargh! Nostalgia caught me by surprise!

I met my wife at Bullfeathers (18yrs and counting!)

Yes, I am actually old enough to remember when lower King Street (well, actually ALL of King Street) was a wasteland, and then The Warehouse opened.

Gordon King has retired, too, and there is some Irish hybrid restaurant thing going into Bullfeather's and Hats in the Belfry's spaces. It is going to be huge, apparently. Then there is the endless construction on the restaurant-to-be on the corner where the Alamo is. Allgedly Asian/French, but we'll see if it ever opens.

The Yard has been dark for at least two months. By and large, closings are kind of rare, I think. Additions to existing stock are more the norm. A recent thread listing Italian--they have all been around for a while. There was one place at the top of King, a mediocre Italian diner that was there forever that has closed, but I can't remember its name. Also, Chintana. Table Talk. I always feel I should have gone more often...

You can discuss it with Gerry MacKenzie, the owner of Scotland Yard (and the guy in the kilt) most mornings in front of Perk Up, the coffee shop on S. Washington. He's decided to retire after some health problems. according to him, Hazel's is supposed to be a southern or soul food place.
