I have a friend who mentioned that he likes going to a road house, the Washoe House, near Cotati - on Stony Point Rd. near Roblar. Drove by and it looks promising - the parking lot was full and the place dates back many years. Anybody been there?
I haven't been there yet but have been eyeing it too. Washoe House was built in 1859. Asked a couple friends who grew up in Petaluma (Washoe House has a rural Petaluma address, although it's pretty close to Cotati), and both of them got almost misty-eyed thinking about past family gatherings there and the simple, good food. I spoke to them separately, and they both recommended the same thing: fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy and biscuits. Now, neither had been there in the last 5 years. My other question to them had been whether it was dive or a place that I might feel comfortable pulling off the road for dinner unescorted. They said lots of characters, but I should feel safe there.
The bar in Washoe House was the location for a scene in Clint Eastwood's True Crime.
