hi everyone.

i'm going up to laurel with a friend tonight and we're looking for something good (as opposed to the myriad of chain restaurants) for dinner. I'm in a BBQ mood, but wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions of places we should try.

thanks in advance.

Pasta Plus (Rt 1 at Rt 198, in the Arby's strip center) is always a winner, though Steve of GWU recently didn't like it. Around the corner, behind Kenny Rogers chicken is a newly renovated carribean place. I had the shrimp appetizer and it was very garlicky and good. If you go up Rt 1 north to where it becomes undivided (at McDonald's and a car dealer) and make a u-turn, there's a little place called bbq house (I think) which has pretty good sandwiches and beans (that's all I've ever had) and I'd think the whole menu is good.

Back in Laurel proper in the shopping center with Chuckie Cheese is a Mexican/Salvadoran place. It is a couple doors down from Chuckie Cheese and has good food and a good strong margarita.

Thanks,

Well, some things I liked at Pasta Plus. But it wasn't worth the wait. So, if there is no line, or you don't mind sitting in the Market area (no line for this), it might be worth a try. What should have been a stellar pizza was made inedible by the overwhelming wood smoke, as if the place caught on fire. Maybe you should try one of the meat dishes and report back....

I second the recs for Pasta Plus and CJ Ferraris. I also think that Asahi on Rt 1 does very nice sushi and Japanese food. It's got a nice setting and service is always friendly. I ate once at Red Hot and Blue and found it disgusting--a chain in the worst sense.

*Actually* if you are looking for bar-b-que by far the best place in Laurel (if it is there) is a truck on the side of Route 1. I kid you not. This old man runs a mobile bar-be-que truck alongside Route 1 and Muirkirk Road(about amile south of Laurel). He has some *great* ribs and bar-be-que sandwiches. He catches the commuters coming off the MARC train in Muirkirk. He's not there some days and I can't really tell what his schedule is.
