I apologize in advance...

OK, so I have friends (6) coming to town who have certain um... expectations of SF. Some style of Tapas is in order, and we're trying to keep it to a mid-range restaurant. Also want to stay closer to d'town. Here are the options so far:

Lisa's on Folsom
Cha Cha Cha (in the Mission!)

You can see the type of place we're looking for. I turn to you, dear Chowhounds, to steer me away from dining calamity.

Yays or Nays, other options graciously welcomed!

  1. I'd love to hear about Ponzu if you decide to go there.

I'd been to Cha Cha Cha on Haight more times than I care because school is so close to the place. And it's not bad but I'd pick any of the places below over them anytime (assuming that the Mission branch is similar to the one on Haight).

If you're willing to stray a little bit, Destino is a good place for peruvian-fusion tapas - it's on Market and Valencia. I think it's a good place to show off our fusiony side to out-of-towners.

My favorite Spanish tapas place among the ones I've tried is Zarzuela in Russian Hill. Skip their paella though; it wasn't bad but definitely needed more saffron.

B44 a Catalan place on Belden Lane (Downtown) is also a pretty good place for tapas, and you can also get their delicious paella-type rice dishes to share. Very Spanish wine list.
