Old Omega

Anybody remember the old Cuban restaurant Omega in Adams-Morgan?
(Maybe my standards have escalated, but it was much better than that Cuba Corner dump.)

Oh, yes! I lived in Woodley Park, and used to cross the bridge every couple of months for the Omega's wonderful Mexican Chicken (shredded white meat in a rich tomato sauce) with black beans and rice.

For a long time, when I was v young, the Omega was one of DC's 2 great bargain restaurants. The other was the Astor, a Greek restaurant on M Street near Connecticut.

I also enjoyed Omega's wonderful Mexican Chicken (shredded white meat in a rich tomato sauce) with black beans and rice.

Does anyone have a recipe for the Mexican Chicken?

Outstanding Cuban food [I believe unequalled ever since it closed] at a reasonable price ----- and reliably frigid air conditioning in the summer. I miss it very much.

Back in the day lived in SS, right on the line... I would get food at the half time of Redskins game... SO GOOD!

In the late '60's and early '70s I think the main dishes were $5 or $6 or so. I think even today the Omega would be the best of its kind here.

Oh my, yes. We lived around the corner at 18th and Kalorama in the early 70's and went all the time. Very good, very reasonably priced food and great waiters (who seemed to love our young boys). We continued to go after we moved away from the neighborhood, and do remember the fire that shut it down, but not exactly when it happened. I still miss the steak smothered in onions and the rice and beans.

Not only very good food at reasonable prices but the air conditionming was ALWAYS cold in the summer. One of the few restaurants you could rely on to be comfortable if not cool in the miserable Washington summers.

              I miss it a lot.

Yes indeed. I was heartbroken when it closed-- after a fire, IIRC.

Yes, a fire. How interesting and un-original a way to close down a legitimate Cuban business back then! But the end result is that it is gone. As are the Masitas de Puerco, Frioles Negros, Plantanos, etc, and the family who ownned it, forgive my spelling, please.

The Omega was one of my favorite joints when I first moved to DC in 1975. My memory may be inaccurate, but I think you get a pretty good meal for about $5. Ymmm.

Maybe even less. Pork, black beans and rice. Sold cigars.
