Romanian restaurants in DC/area?

  • j

Are there any restaurants serving Romanian cuisine in DC or the nearby suburbs? Thank you.

  1. There is a Romamian Orthodox Church on Leesburg Pike (Route 7) in Falls Church across from Skyline Mall just west of Geo Mason Dr. They serve Romanian food on certain occasions in their basement. I live close by to it and occasionally go on sundays and ask when a food event is taking place. There is no other place that serves Romanian food to my knowledge. I had Bulgarian food at the Bulgarian church on 16th St. NW (entrance from a side street). Both these churches do not have bazaars like other churches and are publicity shy. You have to go there and ask when a meal is served.

Naruda, you are fearless my friend. I would hate to go asking like that, my hat's off.

I pay for whatever they charge. Generally it is around $ 6-8 depending on whether you want wine or not.

      2. Although not Romanian...but somewhat close is a new Bulgarian restaurant in Adams Morgan right near the corner of Columbia and 18th Street called Cafe Sofia. I haven't been yet, so I can't offer a review.

I went once a few years ago and was very disappointed. I got the feeling the food was Americanized Bulgarian. The discriptions on the menu, while amusing, do not really discribe the food either.

I can't vouch for it's authenticity, but Cafe Sofia just opened a few months ago (on Columbia Rd.), so you must be thinking of another place...

Ooops, meant months and not years. Sorry about that. It was a little before Halloween.

        2. If you find one in the DC area, please let everyone else know... I visit VA/DC area a lot, and would love to find a good Romanian place there. If you're down in FL, there's a good one in Hollywood called the Transylvanian.

          1. There is not a Romanian restaurant in the DC area that I have found. The above mentioned church does two picnics a year. One in the spring and one in the late summer. They always have mici, ciorba (perisiore si burta), sarmale and sometimes even Ursus. The best way to get on the mailing list is go to the church. I hear from friends for the most part. There are also occasional parties that the church puts on, but I miss a lot of those due to the fact I do not go to the church.

            1. There is a Romanian picnic coming for those who are interested in Ro food and music.
