It's in VA (sorry), but doesn't the del Ray Dreamery do a brats thing in october, sort of in celebration of the WI heritage and octoberfest? You could try checking their web site.

I do not know about Maryland or DC, but Heidelberg Bakery in Arlington (Lee Highway) has great german wursts, including bratwurst. In Falls Church (also on Lee Highway,The German Store also has wursts and lots of German mustards and other condiments.

I've heard that the bakery usually has a brat-bar set up on Saturday mornings. I've not been but have heard it's great.

See posts in the past few days about Cafe Mozart. It's downtown across from the Museum of Women in the Arts. They usually have a happy hour bratwurst special.

I'll second who recommended the German Gourmet in Falls Church, VA. Some of the best I've ever had...

My father-in-law just told me about a place he went to on Philadelphia Road in Golden Ring. It's about a block from Golden Ring Mall and is called, I think, Edon something or other (I know, I'm not being much help). When he went there last Saturday, there was a large truck in front, piling in the sausages. It turns out that the truck was from the German embassy in DC and they get all their meats and sausages from this shop. I'll see if I can track down the name.

He supplies Most bratwurst sold in the area. He closes early around 5 pm. call first to find out the hours they are open. If you are buying large quantity ask for discount. You can see the mini sausage factory there. Guten Appetit!.

No doubt about it... Binkert's. Be warned they are closed on Thursdays.

ps: I am pretty sure they supply Cafe Mozart as well.

Egon Binkert has the best German meat products I have had on the East Coast. Egon himself (he has retired) was a master butcher, and you can still see his master's certificate on the wall in the shop. His daughter and son-in-law have taken over the business, and the quality has been consistent (i.e. great).
Fantastic bratwursts (including Nuernbergers) and some other fine meat products (Zungenwurst anyone?). Run, don't walk.

Is Binkert's just a retail outlet, or is there a deli/carryout counter-type thing, too?

It is a sausage factory and retail outlet. No counter service to eat there. They will tell you where you can get counter service i.e. which delis they supply.
