Dear Chowhounders:
I recently moved to DC, and I am looking for some tips on good, decent, affordable restaurants in the city. It seems that many restaurants in the DC area are accessible only by car. I am carless, therefore metro is my friend. Has anyone heard good things about Thy Phoon in Dupond Circle? Any leads to good Thai restaurants would be appreciated.

Having been carless in DC, I can empathize with your situation. The good news is that many good restaurants are accessible by public transportation. Thaiphoon is decent, but I think these are also worth visiting:

Walking distance from Dupont Circle metro:

Bua Thai
17th & P Streets, NW
http://www.buathai.com/

Metro Center metro:

Haad Thai
1100 New York Avenue
http://www.haadthai.com/

Bethesda metro:

Tara Thai
4828 Bethesda Avenue

My favorite central DC Thai restaurant continues to be Thai Tanic -- despite the kitshy name, which I hate. It's on 14th Street just north of N Street.

I just ate there last night. It was up to its usual standards of great taste & good service. Specials included soft shell crab in a yellow curry sauce.

I'd second Thai Tanic. I think the food there is excellent. My friends and I broke the Yom Kippur fast with delivery from Thai Tanic.

While I still hear that the best Thai food is in the suburbs (usually from people who live there) there's good stuff in DC. I have friends who swear by Thaiphoon, but I think that the food there has gotten worse recently (same goes for the 2 Jandara in NW, owned by the same people). If you do go to Thaiphoon, I think the duck in red curry was pretty excellent. I also like star of siam on 19th street south of dupont, as well as Thai Kitchen on M street and 23rd. Thai Kingdom on K and 21st is pretty good, but the real attraction there is the pepto-bismol pink walls and 100s of pictures of Thai King Chulalongkorn and his family.

Oh, and another Thai place just opened at 22nd and Pennsylvania where Pangea used to be, I think it is called "Thai Room" but I could be wrong. Any reviews?

There's also Singh Thai in Arlington, a short walk from the Courthouse metro stop on Wilson Blvd. Had some exquisite little grilled lamb chops in chili sauce there last night.

If you're willing to expand your public transportation usage to include the bus, Crystal Thai in Arlington off Rte 50/Arlington Blvd is quite good. I don't know where a bus stop close to it would be, but imagine that there has to be one. The restaurant is in a strip mall on a major thoroughfare and abuts a neighborhood as well.

You could also hoof it from Clarendon metro and work up an appetite.

Cheers and good eating -

Ditto on Crystal Thai - it's wonderful. Love the curry dishes. And the 4B from Rosslyn will get you there in 10 minutes - get off at Park Road. Check wmata.com for details.
