i recently recieved information about the american food media conference that will be held at greystone in st. helena in the fall and thot someone might be interested in it.

it's three days, nov. 5-8 and looks like it covers a lot of information. i'm especailly interested in "discover(ing) what the most and least lucrative food media jobs are". maybe i've been doing the wrong thing all this time!

the phone # for more info is 800-888-7850. i tried to check out their web site but it was on the blink. i'll go ahead and include it and wish better luck for others.

and no i am not affiliated, just a food junkie...

I attended this a few years ago. It was a good, basic introduction to food writing, taught with panels of high-powered food writers (ruth reichl, phyllis richman, etc.). However, it was really geared towards beginners--if you're just wondering about the food writing biz, it would be very helpful. If you're already an established, published writer (as I was), it might not teach you that much new stuff. And be warned: there's very little contact with the teachers outside their panel lectures. Don't expect to get to "network" with the biggies--they stick to themselves and aren't there to find new talent among the aspiring hordes. Still, I met some very nice other writers, and the location (St. Helena) can't be beat.

This would be the greatest thing to do, as I love reading Laurie Colwin, Ruth Reichl, etc. Ever so unfortunately though, I will be at boarding school at that time in Ojai, and the school I'm going to does not encourage abcences. I wish there was some way I could do it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
