<content>Check out Ravi Kabob at 305 North Glebe Road. It's a Pakistani place. It's very, very good--and it consistently ranks at the top in my informal poll of cab drivers.

It's in a strip mall with quite a few other places--perhaps you can eat your way through it and report back. </content>

<content>I concur with your remarks about Singh Thai. The first time I ate there it made me sorry for how many meals I lost putting up with garish decor and hostile staff at Sawatdee. Try the soft shell crabs before the month is out. For 16 dollars you get two jumbos and hopefully one will be a female oozing with sweet roe. (apologies for the mental picture)</content>

I love the shrimp with broccoli in garlic sauce, and the shrimp with watercress in peanut sauce. Don't think I realized they had garden rolls - will have to look. Also the coconut ice cream with jackfruit is great. The staff have been fabulous with my preschooler, including teaching him a little bit of Thai.</content>

My last visit to Rocklands was'nt the greatest the chopped pork S/w was good, the potato salad and onion rings were great, the baked beans were dissapointing and the rib sandwich the meat was underdone.
Before the next para I have to say that I am a member of the local bussiness Assn.
Very close to your new digs is Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria with the following
RT's Restaurant
The Birchmere
PO-Siam
Bombay Curry Company
Taqueria Pablano
Evening Star Cafe
Fireflies
Mancini's ( Deli/Cafe)
St Elmo's Coffee Pub
Los Amigos
Al's Steakhouse

<content>I agree with you about Taste of Morocco. Red, Hot, and Blue is well below average as well.

Like I said before, the fish with white onion sauce at Costa Verde is supreme. Another great dish is the Veggie Enchilada at La Union (carryout on Lee Hwy. and sit-down restaurant on Wilson Blvd). But I would order two of them; I don't recommend anything else there.
Taqueria El Charrito Caminante has a great goat taco (really, everything there is good).

<content>Welcome neighbor! I work in Ballston and live about 2 miles down Wilson closer to Seven Corners. I agree with your conclusions! I'm curious about Taste of Morrocco because Tom Sietsema always recommends it over Marrakesh downtown.

Other places you might want to try in Ballston:
Definitely Food Factory. I love their hummus.
Thai Terrace is worth checking out for Thai food. They have a pretty good deal on happy hour specials and their apps are particularly good.

I also suggest you make your way westward...2.5 miles down Wilson is Eden Center in all its Vietnamese glory.

Also, head north into Arlington and you'll find a bunch of good places on Washington Blvd...Lost Dog, Lebanese Taverna.

Enjoy continuing to chow your way through the hood!</content>

I've been to Labanese Taverna and like it.

Thai terrace is good? Hmmmmm. The g/f loves Tara Thai but maybe I can convince her to try TT.

Tyler Cowen (http://www.gmu.edu/jbc/Tyler/ethnic.html)likes Taste of Morocco as well. I don't get it.

I've been to 4 sisters at eden ctr and wasnt impressed. Isnt another vietnamese in or around there better?

Lost Dog is a pizza/sandwich place with a great beer selection. They have a huge variety of unique pizza toppings and many of their sandwiches are served on this yummy, soft pita-type bread.

Huong Viet is another Vietnamese place in Eden Center that has gotten rave reviews from this board. There are a tons of posts on Eden Center and its other treasures.</content>

<content>The following are places we consistently visit...

Thai:
Saigon Asia and Singh Thai...it is always a hard decision for us to choose - both are exceptionally good, good price, and the sizes allow you take the other 1/2 of your meal home.

Sandwiches, etc:
Cassatt's on Lee Hwy - very good paninis, good breakfast items.
Whole Foods - their European-style sandwiches for 6.75 (fave is the Ham, Brie, Asparagus)

Mexican (via TexMex for us):
El Paso Cafe
Chevy's
(Both places serve large servings for Fajitas for 1 - we always split and there is always some leftover)
Mexicali Blues

BBQ:
Rocklands - chopped beef or brisket sandwich is good. More along the lines of "wet" BBQ.

Singh Thai - no menu online
Cassatt's - no menu online
Whole Foods - no menu online, http://www.wholefoods.com/

___________
Other notes:
Thai Terrace is right next door to our apt. - we've given it 3 chances...and for the price it is not worth it. Takeout was undercooked shrimp once, overcooked chicken another time.
Rio Grande Cafe is okay, but overpriced for Mexican food. The tortillas are very good, Sangria is lackluster, and the waitstaff are dismissive.

<content>Re coffee places, take a trip over to the Java Shack on North Franklin Street. Very much a small and intimate places filled with neighborhood locals.

Other neat places to nosh:

Cafe Tirolo - Autstro-Italian fare; small places 3 - 5 tables but great food and cheap; on Fairfax Drive but the exact address escapes me.

Portobellos - on N Pollard St off Lee Hwy; great neighborhood American Bistro; moderate prices, great food, better service; the owners are usually there seating folks, serving meals, and making sure all goes well.

Caribbean Grill - on Lee Hwy &amp; N Geo Mason; really swell Cuban sandwiches and black beans and rice and yuca and all the rest of it; TASTEEEE . . .

Also, have you been over the Courthouse Farmers market on Saturday mornings? I believe it goes year 'round now from 8 a - 12 noon. Well worth frequent visits for swell herbs, bread, cheese and veg.

Enjoy and welcome . . .

<content>I must respectfully disagree with your review of the hummus at Attila's at Courthouse. I found it too salty. It's also expensive (like $2.50 or so for one of those small squat plastic containers, only filled about 2/3 of the way) -- when a $0.67 can of chickpeas in the supermarket will make several times more than that at home. I know you can't really compare prices that way, but heck, if I'm going to pay a markup for good hummus, I'd prefer Lebanese Taverna.

I have a friend who loves Attila's sandwiches tho. (They have some "buy 5 get one free" card or somehing, too.)</content>

<content>Welcome! You've gotten great tips so far, and found great spots on your own.

Do try Santa Fe Cafe on Wilson Boulevard in the Rosslyn area---features Hatch green chile and Chimayo red chile---also has great margaritas and the chiles rellenos are not to be missed.

Also recommend Ray's the Steaks a few blocks down from SFC for great house-cut steak. The owner is the chef who is also the butcher.

Have been pleasantly surprised by Harry's Tap Room in Clarendon. Decor and food are great, service not so polished as they haven't been open two months yet.

Also try Murali in Pentagon Row for nice Italian food in a laid-back fashion-y setting, with heavy reliance on grilled seafood. Mondo Sushi in the same complex has a great bar (I don't eat sushi, but I have been told that it is fine).

Tutto Bene at the corner of Glebe and Randolph is a great red sauce Italian place that also features opera nights with local soloists.

And The Continental in Rosslyn is a fun bar with okay tapas. The decor and vibe make up for the mediocre food.

Cheers!</content>

<content>To your big list of places to try, I'd add in Layalina on Wilson Blvd a little past Ballston (it is on the left if you are heading away from the city after you pass the mall). This is a fabulous spot for MIddle Eastern/Syrian food. Great baba g. and meat dishes. Definitely on par with Lebanese Taverna, if not better.

One place to avoid (that I think someone mentioned below as a place to go) is Guajillo. Last time I was there (and I had been several other times) my fish tacos were made with frozen fried fish fillets straight from Mrs. Paul's. My friend's burrito was terribly bland as well (and he would have rather gone to Baja Fresh, he said). Stay far away!</content>

<content>Ditto the Guajillo review - what a waste of time. I still don't get it - what's the draw? The food is mediocre at best, perhaps a notch (1/2?) above any Tex-Mex mall eatery.

The other place you mention though sounds very good -

<content>The Italian Store is over in the strip of stores on the corner of Lee Hwy &amp; Spout Run. From Courthourse, go N on Veitch, left on Lee Hwy @ the light and the shops will be on your right. CVS and Giant are the anchors.

It's a nifty little deli w/ a large and wide assortment of Italian goodies: pasta, sauces, olives, anchovies, meats, cheeses, and some wines, etc. They make some mean grinders/subs/sammiches call them what you will, and they also make very good pizza. At least I think it is but I don't want to start a discussion on THAT issue. The don't deliver but prep time is 20 - 35 minutes; there can be a line tho most nights when you go to pick it up.

Take a drive on over some time and check the place out . . . </content>

<content>The Italian Store is so good! Get a coldcut italian sub even if you order pizza and save it for later.

You know I heard people giving bad reviews to Thai Terrace, but I like it better than most of the other places in the Arlington area if you like really hot Thai food and ask for them to make it hot(bf doesn't like food as hot as I do, but still really likes it). I wouldn't get take out unless you do it yourself, but the noodles from heaven if you ask for it very hot is delightful.

Also treat yourself to Willow it is upscale and wonderful. I love their steak (no Ray's but they take reservations here), but haven't had anything I didn't like.

Sette Bello is also good they have a risotto with I think veal which is good.

Oh! the little Mediterranean Place across from the Italian Store is good for a gyro, etc (one of the few takeput places I have tried that is still warm when they get to my place).

Also closer to Fall's Church by the Harris Teeter is a sushi place called Sushi Zen it is kind of a whole in the wall little place, but they have the best sushi my brother and I have had in the DC area.

And don't eat Mario's unless you are drunk and it is really late, and if you think you might be sick soon still don't do it.

Anyway I hope you enjoy.</content>

<content>My favorite Vietnamese place is Cafe Dalat - casual, kid-friendly, delicious, large veggie selection, extremely friendly service (if you're picking up takeout and it's not ready yet, they'll seat you with a cup of tea). Love the cari chay (curried tofu and veggies, slightly spicy), the fresh spring rolls (the soft kind), the grilled five-spice pork with rice vermicelli and pancakes. It's emphatically not fancy - paper placemats and such, and the space used to be a pizza place. It's family-run -- some of the waitresses are the owner's children and at least one is in the medical profession (I think she's a doctor, but I'm not sure) working at the restaurant in her time off of work.

Queen Bee hasn't impressed me, and it's overpriced. Otherwise we like Nam Viet and Little Viet Garden.</content>

Iota has a very good catfish wrap (seriously). Las Tascas is decent but not amazing as is Harry's across the street. A couple to add: Tandori Nights in Clarendon, Faccia Luna in Clarendon, and Tivoli in Rosslyn.
