re: kallisti
There was a thread here somewhere with the report. It looks like Bob may have left the country, possibly to care for a sick relative? Anyhow, Bob's 88 got sold, and then the new owners closed it pretty quickly. Bob's 66 is still there, and the quality seems fine, but I haven't seen Bob there in a long time.

re: deangold
yeah taiwanese style shabu shabu is basically hot pot. it's not clear broth/water that you swish meat in and cook it and then eat with a sesame sauce. That's the etymology of the word, and in the authentic sense. It's not a pot with a red broth that you dump everything into at the same time, which is what I received when I ordered shabu shabu.
but i digress.
Blue Ocean and Tachibana both have it.
Tachibana is mising the goma sauce though (light brown sesame sauce)I haven't been to Blue Ocean for Shabu Shabu, but I have been to Tachibana. Tachibana has a a la carte option or set dinner option.

Bob's is a favorite of mine these days. The Shabu is great, but the cooked food can be very good too. I particularly like the crispy tofu appetizer, the freid duck tongues with Thai Basil, the beef with long horn peppers and the pork hock. Some of the teriaki is good too: eel and sausage and shortrib.
I think that either pork and lamb combination or Pork and Clam combination are best for the Shabu Shabu. I also love the shrimp dumpling add on as well. TOfu skin is good because it lets you sop up more of the sauces.

I love Bob's in general. My fiance and I went to Bob's Shabu Shabu in Rockville earlier this month and had a wonderful time. The service is very friendly and the food was excellent. We had the combination beef and chicken shabu shabu with some sides (shrimp, tofu, extra veggies, extra beef), and it was very filling and extremely affordable - the bill was under $20 for more than enough food.

Bob's 88 Shabu Shabu is the real thing - definitely savory over sweet. Nothing like sukiyaki. You get a big plate of vegetables, a plate of whatever meat/seafood you order, and a pot of regular or spicy stock for each person. Tables have inset burners built in, you cook your own stuff, and then dip into sauce and eat. They have a sauce bar with about 10 to choose from/combine.
Very reasonably priced - except for some of the higher-end seafood choices, all entrees were under $10.

Bob of Bob's Noddle 66 in Rockville just opened Bob's 88 Shabu-Shabu (also in Rockville), which I randomly stumpled upon a few nights ago. It was really quite good (we tried the beef and pork shabus), and the staff was so nice to my friend who had her 9 month year-old son. Anyone seen or been yet? It's busy already.
