Oliveto, in Rockridge Market Hall in Oakland, is tops for Italian. Do a search on this board for lots of comments. I also like Rivoli on Solano.

Not sure the last time you were at Oliveto --- it has gone way down hill ------ and the prices - give me a break - the least expensive salad is $15.00 ---- and main entrees start at $25.00 ---- about 6 months ago I had roasted leg of lamb --- the lamb was cut like in hofbrow - with sickly root vegetables --- most people in Rockridge now look to Citron and A Cote or even Garibaldi as much superior to Oliveto

Wow, what a bummer! Oliveto used to be great and reasonably priced, too. I haven't been to the upstairs in a while, just a pizza in the cafe (I'm only in town to visit now). I have to note that someone from LA recently posted about a meal there that he thought was wonderful.

I've always been a fan of Citron; haven't been around yet since A Cote opened, but will rpobably stop by in June.

For the steak part of your question: If you like bistros, try Nizza La Bella on San Pablo Ave (just north of Solano), in Albany. They do one of the best steak-frites I've had in years. It's usually a fairly large rib-eye, although they occasionally substitute another cut. The rest of the menu is generally good too -- more french than italian, though.

I was just at Soizic in Oakland (by Jack London Sq.) It is mediterreanean/Italian and very good. It doesn't look that great on the outside, but it has very eclectic/interesting decor.
