I moved to the west coast 3 years ago and am haunted by memories of some of the best vegetarian food I had ever had at this Asian vegetarian restaurant. My question- is it still there? Any comments from recent visits? I think I have the name right- it was on 355 near Nicholson Lane if my memory serves me right. There was this one dish with "abalone" that had the most exquisite 'fake' seafood product- I could not figure what it was and the management wasn't going to give up the secret- it was made for them somewhere. Does anyone have an inside on this- or has tried this dish? It came with mushrooms, broccali and tomatoes.
thanks for your help!

Yep, the place is still there, still very popular, still totally-veg & partly organic.
My fave things are the veggie gumbo soup & the Gen. Tso's "chicken" (yam really).
They have good M-F 2-course lunch specials too.

As a 2nd choice, Yuan Fu is totally veg, up the Pike about 2 miles.

THANK YOU!!!
Boy, it's making me homesick. I'm out here in Thousand Oaks, 30-45 min from L.A. and there is NOTHING like Vegetable Garden near me. In fact there are no veggie restaurants in these burbs. L.A has a bunch, tho. Do you think I could get that abalone dish delivered? Still would like to find out what they make it with. Hey, anyone coming out here soon? Bring me that dish and I'll pick you up from the airport- but come into burbank- it's the better airport.:)

Boy - I'm really surprised that health & fitness obsessed Southern CA does not have a lot of veggie-only places! Not even veggie Indian?

O.K.- there is an Indian restaurant in T.O.-they have vegetarian dishes but not strickly veg. Then there are Japanese and Thai places that have gluten and tofu. Most Chinese places, outside of L.A. in fact all that I've been to, use that boxed tofu- not the good, fresh stuff, since so few people order it, I presume.. AND you bring up the subject of supposedly fitnessed obsessed So.Cal- HAH HAH HAH! Maybe in L.A., and yes, people go to the fitness clubs, after wolfing down their Carl Junior giant, double chili cheese burgers... I was shocked when I moved out here, thinking there would be a tempeh shop on every corner but NOOOOO! Out here- I call it Ventura County, Kansas, it is purdy darn conservative, mainstream, burger eating, wide-bodied sorts, know what I mean??

Actually there are alot of Indian Vegetarian restaurants around. They aren't really mainstream, but they are great. A couple must visits that are recommended from my Indian co-workers:

Amma Vegetarian: GREAT Dosas - M Street in Georgetown.
Madras Palace: On and Off but VERY authentic (from what my co-workers say) - Off Clopper Road in Gaithersburg (or Germantown???)

Good luck

hey Lauryn!! You totally just made me flashback to Yuan Fu- I used to go there. It was ok but didn't they NOT use onions and garlic? Like they were secretly chinese Hari Krishna people? (did you know that at those Krishna places, where they make all that delicious vegetarian Indian food, that they never use garlic or onion because they believe that when Krishna finally comes back to pluck them out of this worldly plane by their little poney tails, that Krishna will pass over anyone with a garlic or onion smell about them and don't even try covering up with mouthwash????) I guess Krishna does not like garlic. Boy, he dint know what he was missing. Besides, if EVERYONE eats/smells like garlic then....who cares??

It's still there and it's definitely one of the best "fake" meat/seafood places that I've ever been. I half expect someone to do an expose on them (a la Seinfeld with the frozen yogurt) and find out that everything is loaded with !

It's right across the street from the White Flint metro station (red line), which is a plus, as driving in Rockville is an absolute nightmare.

I've never been to this restaurant. However, I do know that Chinese grocery stores sell a product called "mock abalone" in cans; the Chinese name is Chai-Pow-Yu.

If you saute a head of coarsely chopped napa cabbage and add a can of this, the result is wonderful.
