Everything I've tried has been good. A real "comfort food" for me is the steak frites platter. Avoid the Argentine steak, mine was overcooked and chewy.

I'm not quite clear on how we get from "everything I've tried has been good" to "avoid the Argentine steak." My first impulse on what to order at Les Halles is: a taxi! I agree with avoiding the Argentine steak, which should be the focus of an interantional slander suit, and it doesn't seem to be wise to 'over order' in this place with modest charms. Their rib-eye is not worthy... Be content with ordering the cheap special and you'll be fine.

I always get the hanger steak and frites with a frisee salad to start. My wife like the Mussels as well. They are all very good.

I agree with Moe; the hanger steak & frites and the mussels are the way to go. Though I don't like siding with someone outside the family.

Agree with the mussels and "onglet (hanger steak) with frites."

Also, I can highly recommend the steak tartar, made tableside. That said, it's probably been 2-3 years, and the gentleman who made it so well has moved onto Bistro d' Coin. I simply assume that it is still good.

Greg,

On the negative side, you may want to read my posting from last September.

If that's too much trouble, I can boil the message down: avoid the oysters.

I eat frequently at Les Halles when I want my kind of comfort food. The pork rillettes are nice, and my wife likes the mussels and onion soup. The hanger steak is nice, if a bit small, the cote de boeuf for two is a beautiful piece of meat, that's always been perfectly cooked when I've ordered it. The lamb steak looks a bit wan on the plate, but it's a hearty, well flavored specimen.

Also a nice wine list, heavy on good loire reds.

Thanks for all of your prompt and helpful responses. I had the steak, frites, and salad (everyday) special ($15.50) and was very pleased. A very lean and substantial steak serving, wonderfully seasoned. Fries were a bit on the soggy side but nonetheless tasty. Salad small and unremarkable. The steak, however, was really, really good; perfectly cooked to medium rare. In short, what I would hope to receive for $15.50 at this choice (and high rent) location (on Penn Ave with outdoor seating, at corner of 12th). Service, I should add, was excellent. I had the steak and frites at Poste a couple of months ago and found it (1) a few bucks more expensive, without the salad; (2) absurdly paltry - perhaps 5 ounces of meat; (3) clearly overcooked; and, (4) devoid of seasoning / saucing and altogether banal.
