I'm partial to RT's in Arlandria on Mt Vernon Avenue. Sadly, RT's Seafood Kitchen at Courthouse metro is not as good, in my opinion.

While not a typical Cajun restaurant I'm partial to Cajun Bangkok - a cajun-thai restaurant in Old Town. Interesting dishes that combine the hot spices of Cajun and Thai cuisine. Metro accessible too.

Here's a link to an old menu, but I recommend the Pecan-crusted Catfish and the Spicy Blackened Chicken.

Sort of accessible by Metro if you don't mind a little walk. In Bethesda, try the fabulous Louisiana Express. Not gourmet by any means but very yummy!

It's at 2412 18th Street. A twenty minute walk from Dupont Circle Metro, or you can take the U Street Link shuttle from Woodley Park. Good cheap poboys and tasty etouffe.

There's also Taste of New Orleans at 1845 7th Street, but it's nowhere near a metro.

Bardia's used to be OK, not good, but OK. Things have changed though, and not for the better. Last time I was there the fried oysters had the most disgusting and inappropriate batter I have ever encountered on a bivalve. The red beans and rice were made with kidney beans!!! covered with some seemingly catsup-based sauce. The food was so unbelievably bad and bore so little relation to the food of New Orleans that I had to just send the food back and ask for the check for our drinks. It was as if some one with limited culinary experience who had never eaten or seen cajun food tried to guess what it might be based on the names of the dishes. It was kind of an amazing experience really, but one I don't recommend.

Thanks for the tipoff. It's a damned shame you can't find good cheap cajun/creole downtown. Rocky's up the street used to have some decent low country food, but they also went downhill. Is it just that they're using cheaper quality product, or the cook not knowing what the hell "cajun" means?

Further to LizC's and WG's replies, both Bardia's and Cajun Bangkok are tops, thought I've not been to the latter in a while.

Bardia's is simply a jewel and if you're lucky enough to be there when the owner, Bardia, is there, make sure to talk with him. He's a charming, quiet man who loves to tell you about his cooking experiences in New Orleans and elsewhere. Really a very nice man. Sunday breakfast is amazing. Wonderful omlettes w/ Andouille, crawfish, etc.

Taste of New Orleans is a carry-out that has great sandwiches (catfish and oyster po-boys) and is actually less than one block from the Shaw/Howard U metro stop on the green line. I've only been there for lunch--I'm not sure how late they're open...

I also love Bardia's as a laid back brunch kind of place. Their sandwiches aren't as good as Taste of New Orleans, but it's a nice sit down place with good ambiance. Just don't try to go with a big group on the weekend, because it's pretty small.

Butterfly,

Thanks for posting this. I had posted about ToNO before, but got no good reply. And the posts well below are also referring to the nothing place in Aspen Hill.

I look forward to going back when they're open based on your post, and I'm sure it'll be great.

Thanks again,

K
