Taking asun's advice we tried Sputnik Cafe one recent evening, after driving by it at least twice a day since last August. (There's not much competition in the area except Rudy's Tavern). We were delighted with the retro / funky decor. The massive Sputnik candelabra hanging above was really fun, and the corrogated white panelling, bright colors and 50's style plastic chairs were neat-o. There's also an outside patio area open now too.

All the meals were well prepared and beautifully presented: roast duck tacos, chicken rellanos, penne pasta with lime-marinated chicken and sesame seed encrusted salmon. Large portions, reasonable prices (entrees $13 - 16 range). Only the salmon disappointed - it was perfectly cooked, but was a day (or two) past its prime.

The real problem wasn't the kitchen - which clearly is trying very hard. It's the service: there was only one waiter, and he had only been on the job a very short time (days?) and was rather inept, to say the least. We waited so long for our food, without any refills on water, drinks, bread...
I'm sure this won't keep us from returning though - the whole package was surprising and encouraging.

Thanks asun!

I'm glad you liked it; sorry about the service though. They have been going through waiters. I go there for lunch often; and Sputnik is just so much better than anything else in the area, I hope it stays there a long time!
