What is the best Japanese food in Baltimore ?

  • k

I would like a couple of restaurant suggestions for excellent Japanese food in the city or surrounding area. I have a friend who is coming to visit and has spent quite a few weeks in Japan............she wants something terrific.

  1. Kaz's Sushi Bistro in Washington DC is great and I enjoy going there.

    1. I've been to several in the Baltimore area. For great sushi (great defined as exceedingly fresh, creative and plentiful), I'd recommend Kawasaki and Minato's, both on North Charles Street in downtown Baltimore. Nichi Bei Kai in Lutherville has a benihana (sp?) which is supposed to be pretty good. I've only had their sushi, which can be very decent, but not especially creative.

The sushi restaurants here in Baltimore tend to get their fish deliveries on Tuesdays and Fridays (that makes Sunday, Monday and Thursday sushi no-no's). So, if you want very fresh sushi/sashimi, go in the late afternoons or in the evenings on Tuesday and Friday to get the best of what they offer.

      1. Several come to mind but lately I've been enjoying Minato on N Charles (under Donnas and the Ruby Lounge)
They have been getting live scallops on Friday and Saturdays. Shucked and served sashimi style to order... absolutely delicious. They have also been buying White Tuna, it melts in your mouth like butter. Sit at the bar and enjoy... the chef's selection plates are always outstanding visually and for quality.
